Trouble

As the sun broke over the mountain top, Blake was already up and moving. Today was the day that we would start over the mountains and the start of a long journey. The sound of the birds in the nearby trees almost lulled me back to sleep, but the clanging of metal woke me up.

The sound of metal was a long forgotten memory and one that I didn't want to particularly remember.

I stared up at Blake and glanced up just in time to see him handing me a silver dagger. The sharp edge of the blade glinted in the early sunlight and the silver was polished to reflect my stunned face. The hilt was made of steel and there were engravings of the war between the seven deities; embedded in the center of it all was a ruby, the size of a penny. The dagger itself was about a foot long and had a curved hilt. It was gorgeous, but I couldn't take it from him.

I looked at the dagger, then back up at Blake. He looked at me with a confused look on his face and I just shook my head. I couldn't take this from him. I couldn't face the memories from my past and I couldn't take a weapon away from him. He was probably better trained with it anyways.

Suddenly I was broken out of my thoughts by the feeling of cool metal being shoved into my right hand. I look up at Blake and see that he took the chance to shove the dagger in my hand and he stood towering above me holding a glinting black steel sword.

My mouth fell open and I tried to shove the dagger back at him, but he just refused it and he avoided me each time I got anywhere near him.

Finally I gave up and sat back down on the ground. He obviously wasn't going to allow me to give the dagger back, so I guess I was stuck with this.

"Well?"

I turned to look at Blake, neither of us had said anything all morning and now he finally broke the silence between us.

"Well what?"

"No thank you? No form of any kind of thanks?! I just gave you MY personal dagger, I didn't have to, but I don't want you getting into trouble, which you always seem to find yourself in"

I glared at him. He was right though, and he knew he was right.

"Thank you" I mumbled quietly.

I knew he heard me, but I didn't care to look up at his satisfied face. He beat me and he knew it. I wouldn't let him enjoy it by seeing the look on my face.

"Well, are you planning on making that space your new home or are you going to decide to live and come with me?"

Blake nodded towards the spot I was sitting in and then looked up at me. I hadn't realized how late it had gotten, but by now the sun was up in the sky shining down on the world below.

"Oh, well this spot is really comfortable, so I might just take you up on that offer"

I rolled my eyes as I slowly stood up from my spot. The ground wasn't that bad, but it wasn't comfortable. I hated that Blake was right twice now. He already had a big ego and now it just got two times bigger.

Blake had already started walking, so I had to run to catch up, but I felt well rested and had enough energy to run at least that distance. While we walked, I looked around at the forest and noticed how the trees got thicker as we got closer to the start of the mountain. The trees grew from light green to a dark emerald green and the sun was slowly beginning to disappear. The amount of foliage from the trees began blocking out the sun, so the forest grew darker and darker.

I began to realize why Blake had warned me about these mountains. The amount of coverage was just enough that people could easily hide and get away with crime without being noticed.
