If we aren't enemies and we aren't friends then what are we?

Prologue and Chapter 1

Prologue

"You can't tell anybody, If the police finds out..."  

"I know, we'll go to prison"  

They stood back to admire their handiwork.  

"But it was an accident.., I...I didn't mean to" Her eyes filled with tears.  

"What's done , is done, we can't undo the past" She tried to stay strong but inside she was shaking beyond control. 

They started to walk back from the depths of the blackthorn forest, away from what was now a grave.

Chapter 1

She jumped off the bus with a sigh and stared at the grey building towering above her. As she walked to the front doors someone bumped into her and made her fall. A bunch of girls sitting on a nearby wall saw and laughed openly. Katie got up frustrated. 'Hey Katie, Over here!' someone called over to her, she looked at two girls leaning on a pillar, She grinned and walked over to them. They greeted each other with hugs. Before they could start chatting about their summer, someone tapped her on her shoulder. Katie spun around. It was the girls who laughed at her, 'Why are you here?' they demanded, 'In case, you haven't noticed, I go to school here' Katie answered. 'I thought you were going to move' they looked disappointed. 'Change of plans' Katie said with a fake smile. The girl at the front, Rose, opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted as the principal came out. She couldn't say anything in front of him so she gave Katie a dirty look and walked off. 'You two are the best of chums, aren't you?' Tara said with a laugh. 'Yea, in your dreams maybe' Katie sighed. 'You know, I forgot why we started fighting in the first place'. 'Some things are just never meant to be' Jessica said linking arms with Katie and Tara.

The bell rang and the principal started to rush everyone inside. 'I know something to cheer you up' Tara said. 'Yea and what's that?' Katie asked 'We're seniors this year!' She grinned, 'This year is gonna rock' said Jessica. They walked to assembly and ignoring the principal greeting them to another year, Katie looked around the hall for familiar faces. Noel, a guy in her year turned and grinned at her. She blushed and smiled back. Jessica nudged her, 'look at Rose' Katie turned and stared in the direction Jessica was pointing. Rose looked furious about something, 'Better not get on her bad side today' Tara said 'Yea, only problem is, I'm always on her bad side' Katie said laughing. People started walking towards the doors which signalled that assembly was over.

While they were walking, someone stopped Katie, It was Sophie, a year younger than Katie and She was Rose's sister. Unlike with Rose, her and Katie got on quite well together. However Sophie looked troubled 'Can I talk to you?' Katie looked at her friends, 'I'll meet you in class' they nodded and walked on. 'Yea?' Katie turned to Sophie. 'you need to know..' Sophie was whispering and Katie could hardly hear. 'sorry?' Katie asked. Sophie shook her head and swayed dangerously. Katie placed a hand on her shoulder, 'Sophie, are you ok?' Katie inquired, worried. Sophie just shook her head and ran off. 'wait!' Katie shouted but Sophie got lost in the crowd and Katie couldn't see her. Frowning, Katie made her way to class. She walked into class and sat down beside Her friends over by the windows. As the teacher came in and introduced herself, Katie stared out the window thinking about what she just witnessed. 'you need to know' was all Sophie said. Need to know what? Katie wondered. She watched as some toddlers were chasing birds around and their mum's chatting, oblivious. She turned to see Rose staring at her and quickly look away. What was going on?
