Kanai Village in the Kingdom of Rapier… The story begins here…
“I’m going to deliver the flowers now, Grandma!”
“All right. You be careful, now!” Grandma said.
“I will! Here we go…”
I need to take these flowers to Miel’s tavern…
“Hi, Sophie!” a little girl said. “May I come play at the flower shop today?”
“Sure,” I confirmed. “Why don’t you come around 2 o’clock?”
“Yaaaay! All right!” cheered the little girl. “Oh! Kenny wants you to buy him some sweet rolls on the way home!”
“Okay. Tell him I will, and to be patient!”
“I will!”
“Good afternoon! I have a flower delivery for you.”
“Oh. Sophie!” Miel commented. “Thanks for always going out of your way.”
“You’re welcome! It is my job, after all!”
SLAM!
“Did you hear, Miel?” said an innkeeper. “The king has collapsed at the castle!”
“What? Really?” Miel wondered.
The sudden news spreads throughout the tavern. It seems like there are some customers who have already heard.
“Yeah. One of the men staying at my place says the king has gotten very thin,” commented the innkeeper.
“What? I heard he got really fat!” exclaimed a clothier.
“Those stories completely contradict each other!” I shouted.
“Don’t blame me! No one in this village has ever seen the king!” yelled the innkeeper.
That’s true… Most of us in this little country village will go our entire lives without ever seeing the king… I wonder what he’s like… I have some extra time today. Maybe I’ll stop by the library on the way home and read about him.
“Oh, but first I should buy Kenny his bread…”
“Hello!”
“Oh, welcome! We have some new sweet buns in today from a town called Jukushin!” informed the baker.
“Really?”
“It’s not filled with the regular red bean paste. It has sweet potato inside!” the baker implied.
“Wow. I’ve never heard of that…”
Kenny loves sweet rolls with red bean paste, but I bet he’s never had this kind before!
“May I have two of them, please?” I asked.
“Coming right up!” the baker said.
After I finish shopping, I decide to take a shortcut to the library, which is located on the outskirts of the village. The unpaved path is dim and gloomy even in the afternoon.
If only the library was closer, I could go there more often… But it’s rather far away…
“Grrrrrrr!”
