Kayla's pov
“Thank the lord for baseball pants!” my friend Kurtson sighs as we gawk at the practicing baseball players. I suppress a giggle and roll my eyes at him. Kurtson has always had a very flamboyant personality to say the least; but that makes him the perfect partner in crime. We have been friends ever since ninth grade biology when he told me my sweater didn’t flatter my body type. We are now juniors and he still continues to critique my “tragic fashion crimes” as he calls them.
“Alright boys hit the showers!” Coach Price yelled, signaling the end of lunch was nearing. I grab my bag and we start to make our way down the bleachers. The next bell is supposed to ring in 15 minutes which was more than enough time to make it back to the building. Our school, James Carter high, is the only high school in our small town, and the campus isn’t that big. It only takes a minute or two between classes to get to the next one and that’s if you walk slowly.
“You know Kurt, we should probably stop watching their practices… eventually they are going to think we are stalkers.” Kurt stops walking and gives me a look.
“Why would they have open practices if they didn’t want people to watch!?” he demands. I shrug and shove my hands into the pockets of my jeans. He had a point. “Besides if we didn’t come watch how would you admire lover boy from a far? You and I both know you will never actually talk to him.” he smirks.
I hip check him but it doesn’t do anything but knock him a step off balance. “Shut up! At least I have someone to pine over in silence; you just hit on any boy with a pulse!” I tease. He fakes a hurt look and rolls his eyes at me.
“That is far from true my dear, sweet Kayla. You are aware there is a method to my madness and the same goes for my possible lovers.” He gives me a lazy grin that would knock the breath out of any girl. Kurtson, or Kurt as anyone who knows him calls him, is defiantly one of the most stunningly attractive boys to grace our small corner of North Carolina. He’s tall and while he doesn’t have the most muscular build he makes up for it in charm and facial structure. Too bad he bats for the other team.
“Whatever you say Kurtson. Now I must get to the exciting world of AP Calculus.” I hug my book closer to my chest and ignore the glare he sends me for using his full name.

“How goes it Kayla?” Chandler asks as I take my seat next to him.
“Rather lack luster if you ask me.” I answer with a shrug. He smirks and turns his attention back to whatever he was writing in his notebook. Chandler has always been a man of few words. It’s not that he’s shy it’s just that he is more of an observer, or wall flower type. I find it ridiculous though; he is far from ugly; in fact he’s rather attractive. He has dark hair and the dark chocolate eyes to match. And a sense of humor that would charm any girl his wit couldn’t. He glances up and I realize that I was staring. I quickly move my eyes away and try to hide my flushed cheeks.
“Alright today class we will be working with…” the teacher’s monotone voice loses me almost immediately. I had already finished the whole chapter out of boredom so everything he would talk about wouldn’t be anything new. I open my notebook and pretend to take notes anyways.
