Gabriella wanted so much to rush in and just hug her long-lost son, but Rafael's firm grip and the knowledge that she would have plenty of time with him later held her back.
With a click, the cell door finally opened, and Jackson, Riggins, and a third man rushed inside. A scowling Gaines and the other two men hung back, ready to back them up if needed.
Two men came out gripping the frozen boy's arms tightly, while a third followed behind, shutting the cell door behind him. Instantly, Gaines and the two remaining men straightened, splitting up to lead and follow the group.
Gabriella and Rafael trotted behind them, craning to glimpse Alex's black hair before the view was obscured by a muscular shoulder.
The nine people hurried down the hall, ignoring the pleas for help from the warmer cells, and took another left, going deeper into the basement. Gabriella kept up as best as she could, and heaved a sigh of relief as they finally arrived at an unmarked door. One of the men opened the door and the eight filed in.
It was a fairly large room, with a single straight-backed chair against one wall and four chairs facing it. As soon as Alex sat down, a rope went across his chest and looped around the back of the chair, keeping him tightly tethered to the chair.
They weren't willing to take risks, it seemed, as the men hastened to tie his feet to the respective legs of the chair. Finally, they exited, whispering to Gabriella and Rafael that they would be monitoring the room with a surveillance camera.
There was a silence, which was broken by Alex, who was, shockingly, glaring at the two with a hateful emerald gaze. "Thought you'd done the job right, did you?" he spat.
Gabriella reeled back. Why did he sound so venomous? And what did he mean?
"Alex, what-" Rafael began, but the teenage boy ground his teeth. "Just get out!"
Rafael stood firm. "No. Not until we get some answers. Why did you say that?"
Alex growled roughly. "You really don't know? Think, Starr."
Gabriella stumbled towards her son. "Alex!" She reached out, seeking her son's face, but he looked at her with such hatred that she backed away. "Why do you hate us?" Rafael demanded.
Alex was wearing a disbelieving sneer. "You really are something, Starr."
"Tell me what you mean!" Rafael burst out, fist raised angrily. Alex flinched. Instantly Rafael reeled, staring at his hand in horror. He thinks I'm going to hit him!
Gabriella mustered up the courage to start forward once more, and Alex curled his lip in a sneer. "Untie me," he snarled. "First tell me," Rafael demanded, throwing out a hand to stop Gabriella from coming closer.
The raven-haired boy challenged, "Give me one reason to kill you, Starr. One reason."
The murderous glare in the seventeen year old's eyes was enough to make Rafael cautious, but nevertheless, he advanced towards the boy.
Alex smirked. "Got a death wish, Starr? God knows I already have more than enough reason to kill you slowly."
"What do you mean?!" Rafael shouted, sick of games. Alex's bright green eyes darkened. "I've had enough of you, Starr." In one swift move, he stood up and slid out of the bonds, kicking backwards to get the stubborn chair off his legs.
Rafael paled as he realized he was stuck in a soundproof room with a coldhearted killer hell bent on taking his life. He shielded Gabriella with his arms spread out wide. I just have to hold him off until someone monitoring the security cameras gets in here, he thought.
The youth dropped into a hunter's crouch, eyes fixed malevolently on Rafael. Suddenly, the door burst open and Jackson Stone, Gaines, and the three other men were surrounding Alex in a flash. With relief, Rafael ushered Gabriella to the corner, where they watched the proceedings.
The teenage boy glanced around, his bright emerald eyes sparking with anger. "Next time, Starr," he promised as the men closed in.
Then he lashed out, catching one of the men in the throat. As he went down, Alex dispatched another man with a right hook to the jaw, knocking him out cold. The third man collapsed courtesy of a kick to the groin, but Stone and Gaines weren't such easy targets.
Stone pulled a baton from his belt and crouched slightly, springing unexpectedly at Alex. The boy's reflexes kicked in and his hands shot out, catching Stone in the chest and sending him sprawling. But Gaines had crept up behind him and Alex suddenly convulsed, falling to the floor. Gabriella and Rafael's eyes widened as the last man standing put the Taser back into his belt and quickly cuffed Alex's hands behind his back. "No one gets to see him anymore," Gaines spat at the Starrs as the other four men slowly recovered.
"But-" Gabriella protested. Alex stirred slightly, as if on cue, but Gaines cuffed him on the head harshly, and the seventeen year old slumped once more.
Outraged, Rafael opened his mouth to speak, but Gaines cut him off. "No. Take him away!" he ordered. Gabriella could only watch helplessly as her unconscious son was dragged away.
