I explained what had just happened. "That's nice of her," he said softly. We drove through Ridgway State Park entrance and took a left to the parking area. I took a moment after I got out of the car. I was getting back to nature. I followed Wesley down a not exactly marked path. "My dad and I used to come here every summer late at night to star track." We broke into a clearing and the sight took my breath away. "It's even prettier in the daytime," he added. "Just like you." I was flattered but did that mean I was ugly at night? "Those pretty brown eyes." For as long as I'd known him, he'd said that at random but now it had some context. I smiled my 'flattered' smile and threw my arm around his slender waist. I could feel his bones.
"Maybe this can be our place," I said not meaning anything by it. I hoped he hadn't read into that. "Maybe," he replied as he took my hand and led me underneath a tall pine tree. Uh oh. Was this an act of romance? I had . romantically inactive since the last time we saw each other and not much before that. I was so in awe of my surroundings, I didn't notice him pull a pocket knife out.
"What are you doing I asked?" He laughed d cocked his head to the side? "Are you really that ignorant? We're alone. I have a knife. Do the math." "Jesus Christ. Wesley don't do it. Four years, remember?" He shook his head furiously. "You have got to be the stupidest person alive!" He grabbed me by the waist and cut my throat. Blood gurgled in my lungs as I tried to talk. "I love you," I thought. But I didn't say it.
