"You Pass," Slade said.
"What the hell?" Mika asked.
"You guys pass. You were here on time and I've never had students do that before." Slade said.
"No." Rin said, "That's too easy."
"Give us a real test," I said, "nothing is this easy."
That's when Slade really smiled.
"Now you've actually passed. That whole thing was a test. You didn't take the easy way out. You were determined to get the entire thing done. If you were on a mission to take out a bandit crew in a place and find out they had over 50 hostages, you would go the extra mile and release them. You examined past the first bit. You actually pass."
We were dumbfounded. There was no way that was it. There had to be more.
"But I do have to test your combat abilities so let's spar!" He cried out and immediately poofed into smoke. We scattered.
I concentrated chakra into my eyes and they swirled. I felt like I was focusing on everything at once. Things moved in slow motion. I saw leaves rustle. It was near me. Rin and Mika hadn't run in that direction.
I threw three kunai and ran towards it. Speeding by, I saw Slade's red vest jumping up the tree I had just thrown kunai at. I leaped, landing on the handles of the kunai in the tree.
Slade was waiting. He went for a face stab with his kunai. I pulled his arm forward and ducked deep. The blade hit the tree. My foot flew up to his face and at the same time I lunged for his stomach with my fist. He grabbed my foot, got smacked by my fist, but still didn't let go. I quickly brought my other foot around and spun, kicking him hard in the jaw. He hopped out of the tree. I jumped out after him. I hit the ground and kept falling. The ground gave way.
During all that fighting, he made a pitfall trap with a clone. My eyes hardly missed it. The air was knocked out of me. I started running up the walls of the trap. I fell down about halfway up. So I tried once more. Damn. I guess I'm stuck. Stupid Slade.
Hmm. I could use my last kunai to try to climb out. I counted to three and leaped. It stuck in the wall. I felt a fleeting feeling of falling. Wait. I was perfectly safe here. Was this a genjutsu? Release!
My vision changed. I was back in the middle clearing of the forest. Mika was on the ground unmoving and Slade was standing next to Rin and talking. Suddenly Mika gasped and woke up. Slade and Rin walked up to Mika and I.
"You slowpokes woke up! I was wondering when that would happen. Ok so Kurai passed the genjutsu and taijutsu part, Mika passed taijutsu and ninjutsu, Rin passed ninjutsu and genjutsu. So that means you guys have a total of two of all three. So you're all well balanced. You pass again."
"Cool," I said breathlessly. Slade was a bit of an asshole. He didn't even give me a ninjutsu test. Oh well.
"So, now I'm going to work with you guys on the part you didn't do as well with. Kurai come over here to the real me and you other two come with these two clones," at this point Slade split into three Slades, and the other two walked with Mika and Rin.
"So Kurai. Let's see what your chakra nature is. Your natural skill as a ninja is really good so if you master some good ninjutsu you'll be a deadly ninja in no time. Hold on to this paper."
"What does it do?"
"Put chakra into it you genius," Slade said.
"Fine," I grumbled, focusing my bodily energy on the paper. Suddenly it crumpled up.
"So you're a lightning. See if I hold it then it burns up." Slade said grabbing another piece and watching it burn. "Because I have fire nature I can do stuff like this."
