He Was Gone (Part 1)

~A year later~

Ming's POV

It has been a year, but still, no news of him ever since he left. I try to call his number, but all my calls went into his voicemail.

No letter or any message from him. I asked Beam and Forth about Yo's whereabouts, but none of them knew.

Yo, where are you? Don't you think it is time for you to come back?

Ring~ Ring~

Thinking that it might be Yo who's calling me now, I take my phone out and answer without checking the caller ID.

"Son."

It was my Ma.

Disappointment is like a cancer cell slowly drain away every energy and hope I have.

"Hi, Ma, is everything alright?"

"Everything is fine. I just want to remind you that you need to go to the tailor shop to pick up your bridegroom's suit and make sure it fits you. I want my son to be smartly dressed on his wedding."

"Thanks for the reminder, Ma. I will go and pick it up after work."

"Hope I'm not keeping you from your work for too long. Happy working. Remember to come home for dinner."

"Ok, Ma."

I end the call after bidding goodbye to my Ma. Checking my watch, I still have three hours before my work ends.

*Sigh*

Two months... I'm going to get married in two months. I tried to come up with excuses to delay the wedding, but my parents were very firm, and they had even chosen the wedding date.

I have no choice, but to listen to them. Perhaps it's better this way. I don't want Yo see me getting married. I can imagine how anguish it will be because he won't be the only one in agony.

My phone rings again. This time I check the caller ID. It's Forth.

"Hello."

"Ming, can you come over to my house today? It's important."

"Ok. I will be there after work. Forth, is everything alright? Why you sound like... you are about to cry? Is Beam alright?"

"Beam is fine."

Beam is fine... Then... it must be Yo.

"Is it Yo? Has something happens to Yo? Please, Forth, tell me what's wrong!"

Thinking of something might happen to Yo, I can't sit still, beads of perspiration form on my forehead.

Has something happens to Yo? Is he injured?

Fear is like a pair of invisible hands choking me, making me hard to breathe.

"It's... about Yo. We'll talk when you reach here." Forth replies after a long pause.

"I'm on my way. Now."

I end the call and head towards the door after making sure my car keys and wallet are with me.

Beam's POV

Forth informs me, "Ming is on his way to here now."

Lifelessly, I nod my head in response.

Looking down at the shoe-box sized box on the coffee table, tears of anguish fill my eyes and grief numb my heart. I was told to pass this box to Ming. It was Yo's last wish.
