Chapter Three
Ray was kissing me. It was the best feeling in the world. It was icing on the cake for the first day of school. I could feel his hands moving over my back, down to my sides, then -
"I was thinking bout her I'm was thinking about me I'm thinking bout us where we gonna be. Open my eyes...and it was only just a dream. So I travel back, down that road, wig you'd come back, no one knows, and I realize it was only just a dream!" instead of cutting Nelly off in the middle of his song I turned it up and brought it to the bathroom with me so I could listen to something while I took a shower. I sang along and bought the song from iTunes, setting out the dollar I would now owe my parents. I pulled on a white cami an a super thin long sleeved green shirt. It was seethrough, but you could only see the cami. With it I wore a jean miniskirt and white six inch heels. I changed the shirt to a white one. Same thing, just a different color. I put on silver hoop earrings and a silver chain necklace with a heart on the end and a matching bracelet. My backpack was plain brown. It was the kind that looked like what you would carry your laptop in, but this was a backpack. I checked my lime green binder and made sure I had everything. I went downstairs and cut up another peach and some more strawberries and tossed on some sugar. I washed it all down with a gulp of water just as Ray honked outside. I blushed to myself remembering what had happened in my dream. I left my sister a not and the car keys.
'love you! Hope you had a good time in VA! Kisses, Claire. I left a picture of me as well. She hadn't seen the new me yet. I ran to the door, shoving my phone in my bag.
"Hey!" he called from his silver convertable. It had been his dad's until he got a new one.
"Hey!" I tossed my things into the back and climbed in.
"You ready to do this?" he asked.
"No." I said.
"Yeah, you are. Don't worry about it." he smiled at me, nudging me with his elbow. I blushed, smiled, and turned forward. Reaching back in grabbed the seatbelt and buckled in.
"Here we are." he said a few minutes later. We got out and walked in side by side. His arm brushed mine and I felt the heat rising in my cheeks. I held my head high, though. I could feel eyes on my as we approached the door. Even with the heels on he was still taller than me. One foot in front of the other, calire. You can do it. I made it to the office and got my schedual with Ray, and we found our lockers beside eachother.
"First class?" he asked.
"Writing." I said. "Swap." I handed him my yellow paper and he gave me his. We had first, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh period togeather.
"So what were you going to say last night?" I asked, handing him his paper back.
"What? Oh, nothing. I forget." his cheeks were tinted pink again.
"I love it when you blush." I laughed.
"I'm not blushing!"
"Yeah, Ray, you are." I smiled up at him. He smiled back, rolling his eyes. The bell rang as soon as he opened his mouth to say something. We ran to our class and took out seats.
"What?" I whispered. He was watching my hand move over the paper as I wrote.
"What?"
"Never mind." I smiled down at my paper. Damn it, I wanted to kiss him. I bit my lip.
"Listen, Claire, I-"
"Mr. Peterson! Pay attention!" the teacher snapped at him and rays mouth closed.
When it was lunch time I met him in the lunch room. He'd saved me a seat where we was sitting with all his friends.
"Hey." he smiled. "Sit down."
"Thanks." he introduced me, and I experianced another round of stares and "Woah!"'s. I hadn't spotted Jane, but the rumor would reach her wherever she was without a doubt.
When school's final bell rang, Ray and I climbed in his car. No sports today. We drove to his house and went swimming.
"So you were cut off quite a lot today." I said as we stood in the waist deep water.
"Yeah, I know." he smiled.
"So aren't you goin to say something?" I asked.
"No."
"Ray, seriously! Your killing me here!" I said, exasperated. I held out my hands in a shrugging gesture. To my surprise Ray reached out and took them both.
"I know. I'm sorry. It's just... I don't know how to say it." he sighed, and took a step closer. Than goodness the sun was setting, because my face was probably tomato red. There was a noise from the house.. A door had opened. It was Ray's dad.
"Claire?" he called.
"Yeah?"
"You mom wants me to remind you to be home by ten!"
"K!" he left and went back inside. I turned back to Ray.
"God, ray." I sighed. "I'll see you tomorrow." I turned and walked back to the dry sand, staring down at the water. When I reached the beach I grabbed my things and sprinted up the sandy slope into the bathroom to change. I took up my backpack and slung it across my shoulders and sprinted down the beach towards my home, a tear falling from my eye. The wind blew my hair behind me.
"Claire!" I pretended not to hear Ray calling. When I reached my home my legs were burning and I went up to my room. I guess I fell asleep, because next thing I knew it was morning. I was such an idiot. What if we'd have ended up kissing?
