"Boy! Come here!" Jarl Balgruuf the Greater's voice was loud. And very angry. I winced at the sound, not wanting to get another punishment like I did last time I caused mayhem."Apollo!" He yelled for me again. With a sigh I picked myself up from my bed in the sleeping chambers and walked past the Jarls' youngest son, Nelkir, who was laughing at me and making faces at the fact that I had gotten into trouble. I gave him a glare and passed him by without a word. The guards opened up the big gate like doors from the sleeping chambers out to the upper floor of the great hall, Balgruuf being on the lower floor of the great hall.
I approached him at his throne, not even taking the time to bow due to the fact that I wasn't required to since I wasn't part of the common rabble. He stared me down, his eyes showing his anger with me before he even voiced it. I cast my gaze downward, feeling as though I didn't have the right to look him in the eyes. This seemed to make my situation worse though. Balgruuf stood and approached me, still much taller than my 13 year old self was.
"What's all this commotion about you trapping Farengar in a soul gem?" I met his eyes when he spoke, knowing I couldn't avoid his angry stare any longer. I responded by scratching the back of my head and looking back down at my bare feet.
"Do you realize how much this will cost me? I have to send for a court wizard from one of the closer holds so that he can be freed. Your actions are getting out of hand." Balgruuf spoke the last bit more angrily, walking over to the table to pour himself a goblet of wine. He wasn't wrong, of course, but I didn't really care. He gulped down the spiced liquid and then continued.
"I can't keep doing this every time you cause problems, I have a city to run." he rested his fists on the table and sighed, hanging his head, before turning back to me. "I don't have time to deal with the trouble you cause on top of everything going on." I met his eyes, they were more sad and tired now than angry. A wave of guilt washed over me, I tore away from his gaze again, ashamed of myself.
"I'm sorry." I spoke in a hushed voice, not wanting to be any louder than needed. Proventus was smirking smugly down at me from his normal spot beside the throne, I gave him a glare in response.
"A simple apology cannot fix the damage that's been done, Apollo." The Jarl went back to his throne, setting a strong hand on my shoulder for a moment as he passed by. I knew what this meant. He did it to the other trouble making child he took in, Amira, I think her name was.
"Please, no, this is the only home I've had since I came here. I promise, no more trouble making." I looked at him with pleading eyes, my guilt now completely gone. "You can't make me go to that horrible place. Nobody ever leaves from there." I took a few steps forwards, showing my frustrations with his idea.
"You had your chances, boy. I'm sorry. I cannot have this kind of distraction here anymore. Proventus has already packed up your things and taken them to a carriage outside the gates. Irileth will walk you out when you have said your goodbyes." Jarl Balgruuf looked away, guilty and sad. He had told me many times afterwards that he was actually quite fond of me and it pained him to send me off.
"No." I stood tall as I could, puffing my chest slightly, so as to show that I wasn't going to just be tossed aside without a fight. This surprised Balgruuf, I wasn't the type to stand my ground or talk back to anyone.
"No?" He leaned forward, a hand on his chin and an eyebrow raised in question. I could see the annoyance in his eyes. There had been more pressing matters to attend to at that moment. "What do you mean, no? You are still but a guest in this house. You do not own any property here in the Keep, or anywhere in the city, child. You are not able to stay here if you are requested to leave."
