Dwight and Audrey sat at the dining room table on Friday morning. Dwight held the frangible newspaper in front of his face, reading the various columns while he scooped spoonfuls of scrambled eggs into his mouth. Audrey had made them as the two chefs had been given a week off. It was better off that way as they might not be endangered. Dwight was pleased he'd told Audrey everything. She was right, if they didn't have honesty what did they have?
Audrey sat at the other end of glass table reading her not burned copy of Great Expectations. She had almost reached the conclusion now, as Pip proposes to Biddy only to find out that she has married Joe, another character. Audrey was surprised she had not thrown this one in the fire as she disliked it thoroughly. And her new copy of Agatha Christie's 'A Murder is Announced' was practically screaming at her to read it.
Following the breezy audio of the flickering of pages and chewing of foods, the Mathers both finished their meals and reading material. Audrey dropped the two dollar paperback and Dwight closed the newspaper and flung it on the floor. He was dressed in a long brown pinstripe suit with leather shoes. Audrey wore a tight red shirt tucked into a wide, exuberant, black dress. Her face laced with makeup and lipstick.
She gave her husband a look of menace and he laughed. ''Ready?'' he asked. Audrey didn't nod but just smiled and the two of them leaped from the seats and dashed into the hallway. They ran down the exceedingly long corridor and out the front door. The open air engulfed the two as Audrey dashed to light green Chevy. Dwight locked the car and joined her.
He noted the heavy radiance oh her face as she smiled eagerly. Dwight took it upon himself to ask about this. ''And why do you look so pleased.''
She jiggled about in her seat further proving her husband's statement. ''Oh I don’t know. Is it always this vigorous?''
''What?''
''You know, investigating'', she huffed. ''I feel so energetic that I think I could explode. What is that?''
''I think that's why you shouldn't have brandy before breakfast, hmm?'' Dwight badgered.
''Hush now, just drive,'' she said ignorantly.
Dwight started the Chevy up and they began to drive while he pursued his previous note. ''Audrey it's not fun and games. We're following up leads about Sloan and then hunting evidence. It's not like we're secret agents. I think you visit the pictures too often, my dear. You'll need to be careful.''
She shrugged. ''I don't see why. If we're just creeping around then why would I need to be careful?''
Dwight glanced at her briefly, focusing much attention on the road. ''It's not important why; just stay safe in all of this. I should probably be sending to New York if I was a real man.''
''Shut up, you are as real as any man. How many brave men would undertake something like this. One man and his wife versus an entire empire of corruption. You are amazing.''
Dwight kept driving but relished in the silence that followed. He loved when Audrey said things like that about him. It was so nice compared to when they fought and she said the exact opposite of that. The car reached the country roads as they set their destination for the Main Street, the location of Private Detective Brook's offices.
He surveyed his wife peering out of the window as they passed the actual Karricole Falls site. A huge, gushing waterfall that water seemed to just burst from. There was almost a surplus in the flowing stream, looking as if were to collapse. If then disappeared from view, like a flash as Audrey viewed the bare fields that overlooked the sea.
