Dwight Mathers had not known what to expect from the phone call he had that afternoon in work. He had been completing some paperwork and thinking about the case when suddenly the phone gave an sharp, exhilarating trill. It was Audrey and she sounded incredibly nervous and shaky. He asked her what was wrong but the woman was too all over the place. Dwight could tell something was wrong immediately. The silence of his office echoed his loud voice as he tried to assess the problem and tell her to calm down. She finally did and she explained.

‘‘You were right, oh my god, you were right.’’

‘‘Right about what? What is it?’’

‘‘The third party, you said there was a third party watching us and you were right. There is one,’’ Audrey shrieked.

Dwight couldn’t believe it. They had finally uncovered the identity of them. ‘‘Audrey how did you meet them?’’

‘‘There was a woman,’’ she explained, ‘‘her name was Rosalyn. And she was in our house, sitting there. She said she was from this organization and they’re completely unknown.’’

Dwight was shocked. He gripped the telephone in his manly grasp. ‘‘What did this woman say the organization was called?’’ he asked. He grabbed the notebook on his desk and scribbled down her words.

‘‘The Fraternity of the…but that’s just it I can’t remember the rest of it. Oh, Dwight I’m frightened. I wasn’t before but I am now, I’m terrified.’’

Dwight wrote down the name and reassured her. ‘‘Audrey honey everything’s alright, it’s okay. She didn’t hurt you did she?’’

 ‘‘No she didn’t touch me.’’

‘‘Good.’’ He was genuinely relieved. ‘‘Now tell me some more.’’

He heard her breath rapidly. ‘‘Well she that this fraternity are an underground police force and they put criminals away. They’ve been investigating Sloan like we have, that’s why they’re interested in us.’’

‘‘How much did you tell them?’’ he asked. Suddenly Donny’s words began to reverberate in his mind. ‘‘What if your broad tells one of her gal pals and suddenly we’re all dead?’’

‘‘I didn’t need to tell her anything. They know everything about us. Rosalyn said that they are always watching, all the time. They spied on you in a café and at the Anathema Ball.’’ Her words caused Dwight to peer over his shoulder. These people sounded twisted. Dwight had felt their presence at the ball.

‘‘Wow.’’ Dwight drew a sigh of relief that he wouldn’t have to admit to Donny that Audrey had screwed up big time. ‘‘So what do the fraternity want with us?’’

‘‘They said they were impressed with are level of progress and how much we’ve done and they want a compromise. They want to work with us to put Sloan away. What do you think?’’

Dwight didn’t know how to begin to put any of this to words. This was going to need to be done face to face, not over the phone. ‘‘Listen  Audrey hold tight, I’ll be home in a couple of hours. Donny will be with me and we’ll discuss everything together, alright?’’

 ‘‘Dwight, I’m scared.’’

 ‘‘Don’t be. Be brave.’’

 ‘‘I love you,’’ she replied.

‘‘Me too,’’ said Dwight and he put the receiver down. He felt sorry for Audrey who was so frightened of everything at the moment and he felt a rush of danger. As if wasn’t dangerous enough, he thought.
