Percy and Annabeth chased the girl and Euryale down the street and through a construction site until they ended up in a large dirt field. They had lost sight of their target since Percy stopped to pick up the skateboard the girl had dropped, before continuing. Now they stood at the edge of the field, looking in. In the center, the girl stood facing Euryale, masking her terror with a stubborn face. Eurale advanced, but the girl held her ground. From the distance, Percy could see her mouth begin to move, forming words, her eyes had gone completely white and her body stiffened. Suddenly Annabeth and Percy were blinded by a bright light and thrown back by an invisible force, like an explosion.

The world was a blur as Percy's vision began to clear and he sat up, confused and in pain. He immediately looked around. Annabeth was behind him, she lay on the ground, her eyes closed, but she was breathing and in front of him, in the field, stood the small girl and Euryale. But something was off. Yes, the girl was standing in the middle of the field, and it looked like Euryale was attacking, but something was protecting the girl. She was surrounded by, what looked like, a huge glass bowl , preventing Euryale from harming her. But Percy realized that it was some sort of large, purple force field separating her and the gorgon. The girl had fallen to her knees, the white light in her eyes beginning to fade.

Percy reached for his pocket and pulled out Riptide, uncapping the pen, transforming it into a sword. He stood up and ran straight to Euryale. He snuck up behind her, and with one smooth motion, neatly removed her head from the rest of her, her body falling to a heap on the ground. He heard Annabeth calling his name from the distance but he turned the small girl. The force field had fallen away, and the girl was on her knees, exhaustion apparent on her face. She glanced toward him, her eyes no longer blindingly white, but a deep blue color instead, her face an expression of confusion, pain, and exhaustion. By then, Annabeth was standing beside Percy, asking him frantically what had happened, but suddenly all color drained from the girls face, her eyes rolled up into her head, and she fell to the ground, her body still and unmoving.
