The Fall of Mankind
I was fourteen at the time. The titans ruled the world more than our government did. It was kind of a scary thing for a fourteen year old to face at the time.. Scratch that, it was a scary thing for everyone to face during the time. Unlike the thousands of people who died in Wall Maria that day, my family and I had an escape plan. It was just a shame that not all of my family followed the escape plan.
“Rosie! Give Mr. Kidda his fish and I’ve got some errands for you to run.” My father said from the front of our fish shop. More like a stall actually, but it was one of three fish stalls that inhabited Wall Maria. It helped us get by and pay our taxes so I didn’t complain. Even if I had to help out every other second.
“Okay! Be there in a sec Mr Kidda.” I smiled warmly and headed over to the back, grabbing a large fish of some sort. This was the one I guess. I walked back quickly over to the counter and wrapped it up, handing it over to Mr Kidda. “That’ll be $7” I smiled. Once the money was handed over to me I put it under the counter and jogged over to my dad.
“Okay Rose, heres a list of things I need you to get. Get back quick though, I don’t like you being out when its dark.” Dad said hesitantly.
“I’ll be fine. Will be back before you know it, promise.” I nodded stiffly and grabbed a basket to carry all the items I needed to get.
“Oh and also take your sister.”
“Maho? But daaaaad, she’s just gonna slow me down!” I complained.
“She’s been cooped up in the back all day, give her a break. Just don’t lose sight of her.” Dad said strictly.
“Fine…” I grumbled. “Maho come on! We’re running errands!” I shouted, beginning to leave the stall. Soon enough Maho, a small blonde ten year old came waddling out from the shop.
“Rooossiieeeeee! Wait up!” Maho called out.
“Well hurry up then.” I said, loud enough for her to hear. Eventually she did catch up to me. We walked around to the other side of the city which took us quite a while because Maho made me carry her. The errands were just simple things. Just bread, milk and all those other things. We took longer than I would have liked though. And the longer we were away from father the tighter my stomach felt. Something was going to happen. I knew it. I just felt like there was. Whatever it was I was just hoping It would happen already…
“Rose!” A familiar voice called from behind me. I whirled around and smiled when I saw the familiar face.
“Hey Armin.” I greeted warmly and dropped my sister to the ground. Armin was a pretty good friend. Even though he was my sisters age him and a few other people were probably the only people who found me remotely interesting. “Sorry, can’t chat, I’ve gotta start heading back to dad.” I sighed, holding the basket.
“You know, I’ve always found it strange how your family has blonde hair and you have black.” Armin said, changing the topic.
“Well… Genetics are weird.” I shrugged, beginning to walk pass him. I wasn’t wrong when thinking he was trailing behind me.
“Its cool though, it makes you look unique!” Armin raised his voice.
“What has your mum said about talking to girls?” I joked and laughed at him. Suddenly halting, I turned around and looked at him, ruffling his hair. “You should find Eren and Mikasa. Will see you later okay?”
After Armin and I said our goodbyes, my eyes wandered around searching for Maho. Maho… Where was she?
“Maho?” I questioned. Shit. “Maho!?” I yelled. Dad is going to kill me if I lost her!
“Rosie! Over here!” Maho’s voice said from a sweets stand. I jogged over to her and punched her in the shoulder.
“Maho, you had me worrying! You can’t run off like that.” I frowned.
“But loooooook. They are selling sweets for $1! Come on please Rosie you have to buy some I promise I won’t tell father.” Maho begged. This girl wasn’t going to stop until she got what she wanted. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to sit down for a bit and eat something with Maho? I gave into her cries and bought about 15 bags of sweets for us to eat and save for later. As long as Maho didn’t dob we would be good. We took a seat up against a wall and relaxed, taking our time to eat the sweets. The air suddenly became thin and seemed to stop altogether. Which wasn’t anything drastic.
“Rose? How long has it been since the big people came in?” Maho questioned. I felt a lump come up into my throat before I answered.
“I- um I don’t know. About 100 years I think…” I answered, sucking on a sweet.
“Wow 100 years…That’s such a long time. Sayaka was saying the big people were going to come back in soon. What would happen if they did?” Maho said, her voice quivering as she spoke.
“Sayaka is just a teaser. She is just trying to get you scared, ignore her. The titans won’t come in. They can’t get over the wall and haven’t for 100 years. We’re safe okay?” I reassured, squeezing her shoulder. You could tell she was still uneasy about the whole thing. It was easy to see. But Sayaka was right… the titans could come in at any moment. And then what would happen? Was the plan my family had really full proof? Would they make Maho and I retreat to the boats and make us live by ourselves?
“Come on Maho, lets get back to da-“My sentence was cut off by a loud bang which shook the ground. I grunted loudly and held Maho close until the shaking stopped.
“Rosie…what was that?” Maho questioned. I froze in my spot and looked off into the distance, searching for an answer.
“Something just fell off the wall I’m sure of it.” I gulped, getting up off the ground. “Come on lets go back to Papa.” I rushed and grabbed her hand, beginning to walk back to the shop. Nothing bad could have happened, I was worrying for no reason whatsoever. “Hurry Maho.”
We continued walking, jogging to the other half of the city as quick as could. My stomach got more tight as we walked to the shop. This was probably the reason why I was worrying so much over nothing earlier. Over something dropping from the wall. Or at least I hoped it was something dropping from the wall. And then we saw the reason why I was worrying so much over something I didn’t know would happen. The reason why everyones blood was suddenly running cold.
The titans…The titans had taken over Wall Maria.Cheers for reading guys! This story is just being made for fun and hopefully the next chapter will be better, writing skill wise.
