dec was on his way to a café to meet up with stephen. they were going to be talking about what they could do for their last year of school and whatever else they could think of.
once he arrived, he looked around for stephen and found him on his phone in one of the booths. "hey stephen." he said cheefully.
"oh, hi dec! what have you got there?" he pointed to a bag he placed on the table. "oh, it's just something me mum asked me to get at the shop. not important." dec explained.
stephen nodded, showing he understood and spoke again, "so, what do you reckon we should do for our last year?"
dec thought, "hmm. i don't know actually. you?" he looked at stephen who was thinking, "i was thinkin' we could all go out with a bang!" he exaggerated the bang and punched his hand.
"like, with a prank on one of the teachers. or the whole staff." he looked happy with that idea. dec lit up as well, "stephen mulhern, that is by far the best thing i've ever heard you say" he high fived him across the table.
they laughed a little, "didn't think you'd be on board." dec tilted his head in confusion, "why wouldn't i? have you already got who you want to prank?"
stephen took a breath and let it out, "well, yeah, actually. i was thinking we could prank mr. mcpartlin." dec stared.
he didn't know why, but he felt somewhat angry but didn't want stephen to know. "why him? couldn't you have done someone else?" he tried to convince him to do anyone but him, but to no avail, stephen was set on mr. mcpartlin.
as dec went to speak again, he wouldn't believe his eyes. it was him, mr. mcpartlin walking into the café. he had what he could only assume was papers to grade.
he sat at the booth right behind stephen and dec whispered, "stephen. don't look now, but mr. mcpartlin just sat behind you." and of course stephen turned around to see none other than the teacher.
"i said don't look!" he whisper yelled. "sorry! i just had to see. you can't tell me not to do something because then i'll do it!" he was right, dec though about what he should do: leave now with stephen or stay and continue the conversation.
he made up his mind and spoke, "come on, let's go. we don't have to leave, we can sit at a table outside." stephen agreed and stood up.
when they got up, they heard someone speak. "declan? stephen? is that you?" it was the teacher.
they slowly turned around, "oh heeey mr. mcpartlin.. what are you doin' here?" stephen said, since dec was speechless.
"just here for some coffee. and i also need to grade these papers of course. what are you two doing here?" he asked, making eye contact with dec.
"i, uh, we-" he got cut off by stephen speaking for him, "we were just talking about how we could make our last year memorable." he awkwardly smiled, resisting the urge to tell him off.
ant smiled, "ah yes. i remember my last year. it was the best year of my life. it was my best mates and i. we decided to prank the principal by-" he stopped talking and looked at the boys.
"well, i'm sure you don't want to hear about it. now, go on about your day. but if you're really interested, swing by my classroom monday morning and i'll tell you the rest of the story." he smiled at them and they said their goodbyes.
when stephen and dec were outside, dec spoke first, "well, that was.. that happened. how in the bloody hell did he see us?" stephen chuckled.
"well, it's not like we were exactly being stealthy. we were just there to hang out." he explained, "now come on, what's say we sit out here and talk."
dec nodded and sat across from stephen. they talked all afternoon about nothing and anything they came up with. and then stephen brought up one question dec wasn't expecting.
"so dec, do you have your eye on anybody on school?" dec was confused as to why he asked. "why?" he asked with clear confusion in his voice.
stephen started to explain, "i mean, it's just that you've been single, for like, ever and i just wanted to know." he smiled goofily and placed his chin in the palms of his hands.
dec thought about it, the finally said, "yeah. actually i do. but i'm not telling." stephen went to speak but dec interrupted, "and no, it's not a girl."
he added that last part because stephen sometimes forgets that dec is gay and always asks which girl he likes. "right. why won't you tell me? is it piers morgan?"
dec's eyes went wide. "ew! no of course not! why would you even think that?!" stephen laughed. it's not that simon was unattractive, because he wasn't, it was just that he was too mean to people sometimes.
"oh come on deccy. tell me, i want to know." stephen whined. he made puppy dog eyes at dec and dec looked away.
"no stephen, i won't tell you. how about you, do you have your eye on anyone?" he turned the question back on stephen.
he answered immediately, "yes actually, emma." he's had a crush on her since he first saw her, but she had a boyfriend.
suddenly, this conversation wasn't as fun as it had been before. "sorry mate." dec apologized, "i forgot." stephen sniffled a little and looked at dec.
"don't worry about it, i'll be fine." he looked down at his hands. dec looked at him with concern and he felt bad inside.
"hey," he softly spoke, "do you wanna go home or come by my house for a little?" stephen looked up and chose the latter.
they got up and dec grabbed the bag he had and they headed to stephen's car. dec had walked to the café since he didn't live too far from it.
upon arrival to his house, they went straight to dec's room to play games and stephen trying to get dec to spill who he had his eye on.
many failed attempts later and a night filled with laughter, it was nearing midnight and stephen was tired. dec saw his tiredness and offered him the guest room, since it was safer than driving while he was tired and could barely keep his eyes open.
stephen accepted the offer and borrowed trousers and a t-shirt from dec. "goodnight dec, thank you for the pajamas and the room." he walked towards the guest room.
"don't mention it. goodnight stephen, i'll see you tomorrow." he smiled and closed his bedroom door, hearing the guest room one close soon after.
he lied belly down in bed and went right to sleep, too tired even worried about the blanket.
