Chapter 1
I was lying in my bed, listening to Evanescence's song, 'My Immortal' for the one thousandth time that afternoon. Earlier, I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me. Yeah, I know that a girl who's only ten-turning eleven in a couple of days-shouldn't have a boyfriend, but Jace Crawford was so cute and so nice. That'll show me to date a thirteen-year-old boy. Ugh, I hate boys. They're so stupid. The frown on my face was turned upside down at the memory of casting a new hex my adoptive father taught me. When I caught Jace with his lips locked to Ebony Thomas', I cast a Bat-Bogey hex on them both. They were both Muggles, so when their bogies started attacking them, they went berserk. Screaming like little girls, they ran around, trying to escape their enlarged bogies. I found it so hard not to laugh at them. If they had spotted me...well, let's just say that things would not have ended well. Even though I was almost eleven-years-old, I was already skillful at many charms, potions, hexes, and jinxes. I have my adoptive father, Alaric Abbott, to thank for that.
"Lexie, your father would like a word with you in his study," my adoptive mum, Judy Abbott, said.
She stood by my door, her auburn hair was pulled back into a mass of tendrils, surrounding her delicate face. I sighed and got up from my bed. Mother smiled and together, we walked towards my father's study.
"You look cute today, Lexie," she commented.
Looking down, I remembered that I was wearing a crimson, lacy shirt with a black tank/crop top underneath. On my legs, I wore ripped leggings, a lacy, black skirt, and my signature black boots.
"Thanks, mum. Roxie and Rikki curled my hair too."
Roxie and Rikki were my parents' real children, though, they loved me just as much, something my real family never did. The thirteen-year-old twins loved to dress me up in their clothes and do my makeup. Now, if their clothes were bright and colorful, I would have downright refused, but like me, my sisters were Goth. Every single article of clothing in our closets were not only lacy or ripped, but they were also in shades of black, dark purple, dark blue, red, and gray. Never would you see us-or anyone in my family for that matter-wear pink. It was a loathsome color...way too bright and perky for my Goth family's liking. Anyway, my mum left me in front of my father's study doors. Knocking, I let myself in and saw my father reading the weekly newspaper at his desk. When I walked in, he glanced up to look at me.
"Hello, Father. You wished to see me?"
He said nothing, but he neatly folded the newspaper, then gestured for me to sit.
"I was just on the phone with Jace Crawford's parents. They said that he ran inside their house, screaming about bat-shaped bogies trying to attack him and Ebony Thomas."
I smirked briefly at the memory. If the point of this was to make me feel guilty, well, Father was just wasting his breath.
"Did you hex them, Lexie?"
"Yes, Father, I hexed them."
"Would you care to tell me why?"
"Because I caught Jace snogging Ebony."
"So you decided to hex them with a Bat-Bogey hex?"
"Yes, Father. It worked splendidly, if I might add."
Father couldn't keep a straight face any longer as a smile spread across his mouth.
"That's my girl!" He chuckled.
He stood before walking around his desk and then he pulled me up into a hug.
"However, I recommend that next time, you try Quvin Shu on someone."
"Haha, I like that idea, Father."
Quvin Shu was a hex that caused the victim to think that they were living through their worst nightmares. It was the perfect hex to use against Ebony and Jace next.
"In fact, Father, I love that idea! I'm gonna use it on Jace and Ebony tomorrow!"
"As much as I'd love to see my little girl torture those miserable excuses for humans tomorrow, you will have somewhere else to be."
"And where's that, Father?"
I pouted. I really was looking forward to using Quvin Shu on Ebony and Jace tomorrow.
"Think really hard, Lex."
Well, let's see. This week's agenda: Torture and get revenge on Jace and Ebony, and....
"Oh yeah! We're going to Diagon Alley!" I gasped.
"That's right, my evil, little, darling, witch, and why are we going to Diagon Alley?"
"To get my supplies for Hogwarts!" I sang in a sing-song voice.
This was going to be my first year at Hogwarts. School started in about a month, so my family and I were going to get our shopping done early. I was going to be by myself at Hogwarts because Roxie and Rikki attended Beauxbatons Academy in France. They were leaving a week after I arrived at Hogwarts, so I wouldn't be able to say 'good bye' to them at the airport like I used to. I didn't mind going to Hogwarts, though. It was where the Dark Lord went to school and it wasn't too far from home, about a couple hours' drive, actually. It was precisely why my parents didn't want me going to Beauxbatons Academy.
"Dinner's on the table!" Mother yelled.
Father and I walked to the dining room together. Laid out on the table was a delicious-looking meal of lasagne-my favorite dish. Roxie, Rikki, and my mum were already seated with servings of food already on their plates. Father and I hurried to sit down as our House Elf, Liza, heaped servings of delicious lasagne onto our plates.
"What's the occasion, Mum?" I asked.
"I just wanted to have a delicious meal with my family, that's all."
Father raised his eyebrow questioningly at her.
"Oh alright. Here's the reason for celebration."
She snapped her fingers and Liza appeared, carrying a single letter with emerald writing penned on it. The letter was being carried on a silver platter, just like our other mail. Liza bowed before Mother snatched up the letter and dismissed Liza, harshly. Mum handed me the letter and I read the front.
Ms. L. Abbott
Bedroom on the third floor
4th Avenue, London, England
Everyone was watching intently as I opened the envelope and pulled the letter out. I began to read the letter out loud for everyone to hear.
"Dear Ms. Abbott..."
