The next morning, Christy came up to me, rather hurriedly.
"What's going on?" She asked.
Sighing, I closed my locker, "I have no clue."
"I'm kind of scared, Xavier." She said, her voice quiet.
"Of what?"
"Of, you know, failing."
I blinked at Christy. It didn't occur to me that failing was so near before now. We were the last group left standing and by being mad at Aaron, we were jeopardizing the whole thing.
"We're not gonna fail, Christy." I put confidence in my voice to reassure her and myself as well. We couldn't fail. There is so much money and resources being put into our well-being. It wasn't even our choice anymore.
She nodded at me, chewing on her lip. It seemed to have worked, for now.
"What about Aaron?" She asked.
"He needs to figure himself out. It's not our fault though. I promise."
"We should all talk, like we used to." That seemed so far away now. We could just sit in a room and talk and talk for hours. That is, until Aaron grew up.
"It would make everything easier, that's for sure," I sighed.
"But we're too busy."
I nodded again. This was a one-sided conversation, wasn't it?
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
Christy raised an eyebrow at me, "Who is it?"
Shrugging, I pulled my phone out of my pocket to see that Simeon's name lit up my phone.
"Jack." I lied. It scared me how naturally it came.
"Oh." She didn't pry any further and it almost made me feel bad. Reading the text, a smile appeared on my face, though I tried to repress it.
Simeon: wassup?
Me: What kind of texting is that?
Simeon: Oh, I'm sorry...
Simeon: ...Your Highness.
Trying not to roll my eyes, I returned to the conversation, "Just seeing if I was free today."
It was a lie that I had made up before hand but actually using just felt... wrong. So instead, I just focused on a comeback for Simeon.
"Xavier, how are we going to fix this?"
I shouldn't be texting Simeon during this crisis. She looked so worried. I put my phone in my pocket and gave my full attention to her, "I..."
I didn't know.
She reached out and grabbed my hand, "We'll figure it out though, right?'
Caught off guard, I blinked a couple of times before nodding, "We have to."
Her eyes were focused on my face, probably searching for any trace of a lie. That is, until she focused on something behind me. As soon as she did, she dropped my hand and I was aware of it just hanging awkwardly at my side.
"Heya guys! What's up?" Brittany's voice came from behind me.
I felt a smile come to my face, "Hey."
Christy just smiled at her, "I was just about to go. Catch you later, Brittany. Xavier."
No, she wasn't.
