At the salon, one of the customers was my English best friend Elizabeth, I call her Zee. I was wetting her hair.
"How's Zee today?" I asked.
"Good!"
"Great. How's your family?"
"Everyone's good!"
"Good...I'm glad you're doing ok, even after we graduated, at least we still hang out. What are you gonna do now that you're done with school?"
I sighed as I started scrubbing.
"I'm sorry Zee Zee girl, I'm turning into my dad."
"Les girl, it's fine! I took a job as a cashier at the local convenient store, twelve hours from noon to midnight. I'm not going to college."
"Not go to college!? If you don't go to college, you might end up as a waitress or a cabbie like my dad! College can get you a job like a doctor or something better than that!"
"I'm sorry Les. College isn't for me. I like my current job, minimum wage is fair enough to pay rent."
"Fair...for a small cheap apartment. Listen, I know you were an underachiever in school but you need to be more responsible, step up your game. Style, smart thinking, showmanship - I did it again!"
We laughed. I rinsed her hair and applied the conditioner.
"Wanna walk with me to work this afternoon?" Zee asked.
"Yeah sure, my lunch break is at 11:30, then Dad'll find us and insist he give us a ride...no charge."
"He does that every time I come here to the salon, really sweet of him to do that for me. He may talk too much but he's a good person."
It was my break time already. Me and Zee were walking on the sidewalks of England. Half a mile late, Dad saw us and stopped.
"Hi Elizabeth! Need a lift to the store?"
"Sure Mr. Gormley! Thank you!"
"Hop in."
We got in. He dropped her off.
"Thanks Mr. Gormley, no charge as usual?"
"Nope."
He smiled as she walked in the store. On the way back to work, we saw Brogan walking on the sidewalk. Dad started honking the horn. Brogan started running.
"He thinks you're a cop, he's so stupid!" I said.
Me and Dad were giggling. Brogan stopped at a dead end. Dad stuck his head out the window.
"Hey Brogan, you heading home? You want a lift?"
Brogan jogged to us.
"Jesus Lar! Is that you man?"
Brogan got in.
"Leslie!"
"Hi Brogan!"
He gave me a high five. Dad dropped me off back at work.
