It has now been 10 years since Elyssa got leukemia.

Oh, yeah. It's my birthday, too.

"Happy Birthday, butthole." Elyssa woke me up by her jumping on top of me.

I groaned and gently pushed her off, making her giggle. That adorable little giggle that she always does when she thinks it's funny to annoy me on purpose.

"I got you a present!" She clapped her hands together in excitement.

"A kiss, eh?" I pucker up, teasingly.

"Hell no!" She defend her mouth with her hands.

"You need to wash your mouth before kissing my lips, Mendes." She said between her mouth.

"Fine." I say all grouchy. I pulled myself up and walked my way to the bathroom.

Basically, our houses are similar since this whole neighborhood has the same house form. So Elyssa's room is like my room.

I brush my teeth and can see the cheeky smile on her cute face from the reflection.

Once I was done, I charged at her. She laughed and wrapped her legs around me. Now, I was on top of her on my bed.

"Happy Birthday, Shawn." She tuned. "How old are you now? Ten?"

"Ha-Ha." I say sarcastically.

"I am now 17 and as for you," I poke her nose. "You're still 15."

"Just until a few more days, smart ass." She bites back.

I laugh and lean in to kiss her, until we heard footsteps on the hallway. Elyssa immediately pushed me away, causing me to fall back on the floor.

Two knocks were heard until my mother came in with a small present bag and balloons.

"Happy Birthday, Shawn!" She smiled, but then realized I was on the floor and Elyssa was on my bed.

"What ha-"

"Shawn and I were wrestling." She turns her head to me. "I won, obviously."

"I was just playing weak for you." I play along.

"We all know I'm stronger." She smiles.

"Don't be so cocky, Ramirez." I stood up and hug my mom.

"I'm not. So don't make up excuses, Mendes."

"Okay, guys." My mom laughs and gives a quick kiss on my cheek.

"Happy Birthday." She smiles.

She handed me the bag and hugged me tightly. Elyssa and my mom watch me as I pull out the paper before seeing my present. Inside the bag was a small black velvet box. I opened the box into seeing two guitar picks. Both having initials, in which I already knew what.

The first pick was black with my dad's initials, and the second one was blue with my initials.

I look up at my mom, feeling the chill up my spine. She was crying already.

"You're father wanted you to play with his pick when you grow up and follow your dreams. Something to remember him by..."

"It's beautiful. Th-thank you." I lean in to hug her tightly. She sobbed on my shoulder for a while before pulling away and wiping away her tears.

I wipe my eyes, feeling like it's noticeable that my eyes are now watery.

"Oh, well." She lightly laughs. "I'll go make some breakfast for the both of you."

"Thanks mom." I say once again before she disappears out of the room and down the stairs.

I wore a flannel and a beanie with jeans and a shirt since today was pretty windy. The weather has been really weird lately and honestly I don't mind because its almost Fall and that's my favorite season.

Elyssa told me to wait outside her house at around 6:30pm and here I am. It's now 6:35 and she still had not come out.

Just as I was about to call her, the front door opened up and she came out with a similar outfit. We were basically matching without meaning to.

"You copied my outfit." I teased.

"Uh, no no no. Who began to wear flannels first? That's right. ME." She gave a quick kiss before pulled my arm to follow her.

"Where are we going Ramirez?"

She just smiled and shrugged. The walk wasn't long. We just walked to the nearby park.

There was a spot that had a blanket on the floor with a basket on top and a soccerball beside it.

I eyed her with a smirk a she gave a cute little confident smile before running as fast as she can to the spot.

I panicked when she had stopped and bent down, breathing heavily. I ran to her and helped her sit down.

"I've told you not to run like that."

She waved me off and turned around to grab the basket. She opened it up and pulled out two big bags of Hot Cheetos and two tall cans of Coke.

I couldn't help but laugh and how cute she is on loving to eat junk. She passed me a bag and a can.

"You know I hate being all romantic and shit." She claimed.

"I know." I opened up the can and took a big gulp, making a a face because of all the gas.

I love how she made something so simple but knows that I will appreciate everything. We both lay on our stomaches and make conversation about school, family, and life in general until she interrupted me and pulled out two Nintendo DS and I couldn't help but gasp. These are so old but honestly were my favorite. She knows how I love old things that involve either games or music. She passed me the gray one while she stayed with the red one.

"You have Pokemon on yours and I have Mario. But don't worry, I have more in the basket."

"Your simple gestures for my birthday are amazing." I smile and lean in to kiss her.

"But let's play some soccer now, shall we?" She giggled and jumps up.

I groan playfully and follow along. We both took off our flannels and made a goal out of them. And to make the other goal we used the basket and our shoes. So basically we were playing soccer with only out socks but it wasn't a problem because this wasn't our first time doing this.

"Okay. Ready. Set. Go!" She kicked it up and we both charged at it.

She laughed when she took the ball from me and scored, doing a little dance to rub it I'm my face.

"I was taking it easy."

"You know I hate it when you do that." She stuck her tongue out.

We played some more and it was barely 3-4 with her winning when she stopped and fell to her knees.

She began to breath heavily again and I grabbed her. She wouldn't respond when I called her name and my body began to shake.

"Elyssa, come on." My eyes began to get all watery.

I quickly pulled out my phone to dial 911. They took about 5 minutes to get here and quickly took her to the truck with an oxygen tank.

I wasn't aloud to go in and leave with them since I was not related to her and they called her parents to notify them. They left with me standing there alone.

On my birthday.
