Artemis drove up to the large iron gates indicating she had reached the wayne grounds. There she found Superboy, Kaldur, Wally, and Meegan. They all looked dashing-and nearly unrecognizable-in their fine clothes.
"You all ready for this?" she asked.
"Are you kidding? Ive been waiting my whole life to get into the Wayne Manor!" replied Wally. "Rumor has it that the floor is just one giant sharktank. And I once heard they have a chocalate fountain you can actually swim in!"
"wally, my sources tell me that nearly all youre information regarding the house is widely unreliable," replied Aqualad. Wally's excitement seemed to deflate partially, but he was still nearly jumping up and down to go inside.
"Heres all your passes to get in," said aqualad. He handed out 4 golden all access passes. "Im sure I dont need to remind you what all your jobs are. If any of you need to get a hold of batman, he said we just need to press the wayne logo on our cards. I guess him and robin are pretty busy in Bludhaven tonight so he wont want you to do that in case its an emergency. Lets please do our best to make sure theres no emergency."
They all nodded their hands grimly. An emergencey for Batman meant something along the lines of the whole place blowing up. And no one was going to dare be the first to call him and say they'd screwed up there first solo mission in ages.
They all broke off and headed up to the manor seperately. It was more discreet that way. Kaldur Meegan and superboy slipped off to the places that the robbery was most likely going to occur. Wally and Artemis went off towards their babysitting jobs.
Artemis couldnt help but gape in awe the closer she got to the house. It was so far beyond wealthy she could barely comprehend it. The architecture looked like something you'd find in a stunning-and haunted- mid-evil castle. Looming towers rose off in every direction. Gargoyles lurked in every corner so realistic you almost felt like they were actually watching you. Beautiful columns with intricate ancient carvings decorated the front entrance. And yet somehow..the whole place felt completely modern. Closer examination showed faint blue electricity running through the cracks in the stone. The gargoyles red glowing eyes looked eerily similar to security cameras. All the metal workings appeared to be made from some strange blueish alloy she couldn't recognize.
The most expensive cars imaginable rolled up to the front steps in one long procession. A long line of the cities most elite were waiting to the enter the building. She strolled to the front of it with her head held high.
At the entrance she waved her large golden pass and a well dressed butler quickly appeared. He offered her his hand to help her up the steps and she brusquely waved it aside. He seemed to smile at that. Odd.
"Artemis, I presume?" said the man in a clipped british voice. " My name is Alfred. Will you be Young Master Wayne's body gaurd for tonight?"
"Umm...yup. Uhuh. That's me alright. I guess I was the best body guard Bruce could afford."
Alfred stared at her blankly.
"Oh that was a joke. I was being sarcastic. You know..because he's so rich and I look nothing like a typical body gaurd." Artemis fumbled.
The man stared with a faint air of disapproval. Jeez. She couldnt imagine living here with him always around. He seemed to have a constant sense of disappointment floating around him.
"I assure you Master Wayne always orders the very best staff. You were highly recommended from some friend of his in the army. He says you were the best one for the job and thats all I need to know."
She nodded her head and followed him throughout the manor. The way he kept glancing at her made her uncomfortable. It was like he could read her mind. It wasnt often people intimidated her but for some reason this frail old man did.
She took the free time to look around the mansion. The place was already full of guests. She felt slightly nuseated at all the opulence around her. One shoe from one of the ritzy old ladies next to her would be enough to pay her and her sisters rent for a month.
The inside was just as luxorious as the outside. But it was much more tasteful than she expected. The overall effect was once again like that of an ancient beautiful castle, oddly meshed with futuristic technology in a way that somehow worked. The large granite fire places were filled with strange multicolored flames that seemed cold instead of hot. Antique paintings of the Wayne ancestry decorated the walls, but some of the paintings seemed to actually be moving-with subjects who occasionally smiled or winked. Brilliant massive diamond chandleliers hung above. They were old enough to have been designed to hold fire but instead held strange glowing orbs.
Obviously Mr. Wayne could afford the newest greatest technology before it got into the hands of the common folk.
She followed Alfred for several more minutes past hoards of people. They were all marveling over the mansion just like she was. She seemed to be heading to the epicenter of the crowd. People were all drawn in towards one end of the ballroom. In a break in the crowd she caught a glance of the guy she'd be spending the next 5 hours babysitting.
Richard Wayne.
She hated to admit it..but he was actually pretty cute. Handsome even.
But his dad had probably bought him all the best plastic surgeons or something. Everyone new apearances were all that mattered to the Waynes.
Still she felt herself blushing a bit the closer she got. He was taller than she expected, and had a lean muscular build, shown off by his perfectly tailored tux. Certainly not the body type she expected of a billionaires son. His hair was jet black and slightly unkept. He had mischevious green eyes that seemed vaguely familiar. She must have seen him before in one of those celebrity gossip magazines. She tried to stay away from that sort of stuff generally but it was the only thing that made sense for why she'd recognize him. Goodness knows her family didnt associate with people like the waynes- unless it was one of those times she was trying to convince cheshire not to assassinate them.
Calming her nerves she walked directly towards Richard.
