chapter six - he's back

-

Derek couldn't recall the last time he had ever cooked, and the lack of flavour and seasoning on the potatoes showed that. He had cooked the eggs just fine, but the potatoes he was cooking tasted a little bland and he couldn't quite remember what else went well with flavour them.

"Onion," Aidriel announced from the doorway, "Onion will give them more of a taste than just salt and pepper." He watched his brother slowly make his way over to the bowl on the counter. Aidriel's movements were slow and stiff due to the crutches and he winced every time he put pressure on his armpits and Derek felt back, he knew how uncomfortable those crutches were.

Derek kept a close eye on his brother, making sure he wasn't putting too much pressure on his ankle as he got out the cutting board and hopped to the sink to wash a knife. Silently leaning against the counter by the cooker, he watched as Aidriel chopped the onions, completely amazed when he didn't blink once or show any signs that made it look like his eyes were burning.

"What the fuck," Derek mumbled when his twin finished chopping the onions and limped over to drop them in the pan with the half cooked potatoes before covering it so they'd cook faster. "What kind of fucking sorcery is this?! Do your eyes not burn?"

Aidriel shrugged and ran his hand through his hair before making a face when he remembered his hands were kind of onion-y, "Rinsing the knife with cold water before chopping the demon spawns help. Try it next time."

"Mum left to work this morning, she'll be back on Sunday, her boss didn't like that she left unexpectedly so she has to work an extra day," Derek said and helped Aidriel back across the kitchen to his crutches before his brother playfully pushed him away as he made his way towards the living room slowly with those damned crutches that he hated so much.

Aidriel grunted in response as he plopped down on the couch with the remote in his pale hands. Derek stared at him for a couple of more seconds before he returned back to the kitchen to finish cooking breakfast.

"God dammit, Kate, why don't you ever clean up your fucking messes!" Haidyn growled as he nearly tripped over the dead girl in front of the last step of the stairs. He heard a nearly silent cackle from the living room before there was a blur zipping in front of him and picking up the girl.

Haidyn growled at nothing in particular and stalked towards the door. He hadn't been expecting the day to be as sunny as it was and the brightness of the sun had caught him off guard and he stumbled back into the darkness of his house. Rubbing furiously at his eyes, he blindly reached out at the bowl by the door where he put his keys and wallet and sunglasses.

Clumsily slipping the Ray Bans onto his face, over his eyes, he walked back out of the house, slamming the door behind him with his car keys and wallet in his hands. He obnoxiously jiggled his keys as he walked towards his car parked in the drive. He ignored the lady across the street who was waving at him, acting like he didn't see her.

Once inside his car, he started it and backed out the drive and towards the city centre. He hadn't registered himself in the city yet and he couldn't be arsed to be bothered later that month by registered vampire officials dragging him into the city centre to register. He'd rather have gotten it done now than later upon petty threats.
