~Chapter 4~
After closing the front door to the house, I directly ran up the stairs to pack before my parents caught me. I made it halfway up the stairs before Mom called me down. I sighed and turned around to meet both of my parent’s worn and tired faces at the bottom. Dad had his stern face on, with his jaw jutting out and his eyes glazed over. Apparently Mom filled in Dad with my new assignment, along with her opinion on it.
“Can we talk to you in the living room?” he asked.
“I kind of have to pack,” I declined, pointing to my room.
“We just want to talk,” Mom said politely.
“Okay, but here is fine.”
They looked at each other and nodded. “We really don’t want you to go on this mission.” Mom blurted out.
“Well, I am. The plane leaves tomorrow morning. Ben and I will be on it.”
“Are you sure it is the best choice?” Dad asked.
I faced him. “I thought you would at least be proud of me. At least I am. I graduated just two days ago and already going out into the field on a mission. I think that is pretty damn awesome, why not you?”
“Exactly. You just graduated, it might be dangerous.” Mom countered.
“I am going with my best friend who I trust with my life. We went to the briefing this morning. I swear it’s not going to be dangerous. Plus, do you think Uncle Julian would really send me on a suicide mission. I am going to be perfectly fine, so can you two be fine with it, please?” I looked at both with them, pleading.
“Any mission can be dangerous sweetie.” Mom warned.
“That comes with the job, Mom,” I retaliated.
“We want you to be safe!” Mom exclaimed.
“If you wanted me to be safe, I would’ve never been trained to be a spy!” I exclaimed, raising my hands. “But I was. I trained and graduated top in my class. I’m ready! I’ve been ready. Julian would’ve never proposed this if he didn’t think I was ready!” I yelled, tired of this argument. I know they’re worried, but they know what I am capable of.
“We just don’t want you to end up like–” Mom drifted off.
“Like Amber! I know, I know,” I mocked. “I know we’ve never really talked about what happened to her, but trust me. Why would I ever do what she did!” I’ve finally had enough and ran up the stairs.
Jack poked his head out of his room. He heard the entire argument. I didn’t have the heart to look back at Mom and Dad; I could imagine their expressions, shocked and speechless. I tried to smile at Jack, but failed. I instead ruffled his hair and whispered to him that it was going to be okay. I think that was more for my benefit more than his.
I kept walking to my room and took out my duffle. I started packing my essentials and too distracted to notice, Jack followed me in. He was sat on my bed in silence and just stared at me.
“What Jack?” I stopped packing.
“So you’re leaving?”
“Yeah, and Ben’s coming with me.” I answered hoarsely.
“Great!” He sarcastically and threw his arms up. “Now guess who will be bored until you come back.” His arms were now crossed against his chest and was pouting.
“Hmm, you?” I joked.
“Well, duh.” I laughed at that. “So what are you going to do?”
