Chapter 2 - Distractions

"I wanna be the very best! That no one ever was!" The Pokémon theme song snapped me out of my reverie. I checked the caller ID on my phone, let it ring for a few seconds, and finally decided to answer it.

"Hey Chels,"

"OMG HeyMel!!!IjustwantedtoletyouknowthatIgotacutenewdressandIreallywannahavepeopleovertonightandshowitoffand-"

"Hey Chels?"

"Yeah?!?!?!"

"Stop. Rewind. Replay, and slow down."

"Oh, right. Sorry. Anyway, I went shopping today cuz my mom took me as an early birthday present and I found the CUTEST dress in the entire world. It's this white halter with a white lacey floral pattern and it looks amazing on me and I'm having a party tonight to show it off. You coming?"

I wanted to say no. I really did. But I knew my best friend. If I didn't show up, she'd think nobody else would want to. And I probably needed to get out of my room; away from the story I wasn't writing.

"Sure Chels, what time?"

"OMGYAYYYYYYI'MSOEXCITEDYOU'RECOMING!" she squealed into the phone.

"Uh Chels...Slow down and try lowering the volume a few decibels."

"Oops. Right. Well, I'm SOOOO EXCITED you can come! What are you going to wear? Tell me everything. I'm inviting a lot of people, so don't wear what you wore to school today, please!"

I looked down at my outfit. What was wrong with flip-flops, volleyball sweats, and a tank top? Oh, right. She was inviting our guy friends too and if she looked good that meant I had to as well.

"Chels, I don't know? Maybe jeans and a t-shirt?"

"Oh geez. Don't do this to me. I'll be over in twenty minutes and I can figure something out. Go shower and dry your hair so you'll be ready for me. Then when we're done we can get back to my house and set up."

She would do this to me. I love her to death and she's been my best friend since forever, but sometimes I think she just tries to drive me crazy. I'm a minimalist personality. I don't do my makeup to go to school, and I don't put thought into my outfits. I go for clean and comfortable. How I ended up with someone like her as a best friend always baffled me a little bit, but I never really questioned it. It just kind of worked. I was always there as a wingman of sorts, someone for her to go to parties with, and she was always my campaign manager. We were on the dance team together and didn't have any classes with each other. She loved dressing up and flirting whereas I would rather just get through school. But at the end of the day, I helped her get ready for every first date, and the one time I needed her to be there for me, she dropped everything.

I sat down at my desk again. Maybe I could write about how we became friends, or how we were complete opposites but got along anyway, or I could write about......no. I wouldn't write about that. If I wouldn't even talk about it with her after the fact, how could I share it with strangers? Ughhh, more ideas that led to nowhere.

I figured I should probably get in the shower before Chelsea got here and found me still in my sweats staring at a blank piece of paper.

So here's chapter 2! Tell me what you think. I would really appreciate any feedback you may have. (oh and if you'd tell your friends about me, I'd appreciate that as well!)

xoxo,

Mel
