SapphiraPack life has changed a bit since the influx of new pack members, especially with all the kids that now fill the once empty guest rooms. I insisted that the ones who came without family and are still not old enough to shift stay in the pack house, to which Kane happily agreed.
Ever since then, the pups have flocked around me, especially when we watch tv and eat meals. I've enjoyed spending time with both the older kids and their younger siblings, and as much as I know I'm not their mother, it's heartwarming to know that they see me as a maternal figure.
"Luna! Luna!"
I turn at the sound of running feet and little voices calling for me, smiling at the sight of a couple of the younger pups coming towards me, one little boy named Keith holding a bundled up blanket securely in his arms.
"Hey guys! What's up?" I ask as I crouch down to their level, getting a bit concerned as I notice the bundle wiggle and make small noises.
"Can we keep him? Can we please?" Keith pleads, his brown puppy dog eyes already out and extra potent...but I hold my ground, goddess only knows what he's holding right now.
"Who is he?" I ask, pointing at the now whining blanket. He gently moves the material back so I could see...and I sigh in relief. It's a puppy.
"We found him outside stuck in a hole, he's cold and dirty, can I please keep him? I promise I'll take care of him!"
I look between Keith and the puppy in his arms, both of them giving pleading looks that would make even the strongest willed cave. Six year old Keith doesn't have parents to ask, he had followed the older kids that were part of the Black Sun orphanage when they left, so the decision is mine to make.
"If you promise to take good care of him, do you promise?" I ask, and he nods happily as the puppy wags his tail.
"Alright then...let's give the little guy a bath." I say with a smile, and the rest of the kids run off somewhere as Keith follows me the nearest bathroom.
As he promised, Keith helps give the puppy a bath, filling up the tub with a couple inches of warm water after initially rinsing the little guy off, and using some baby wash in the absence of actual dog shampoo. It didn't take long for the soap bubbles to start building up, and between the shaking dog and me and Keith splashing water at each other...all three of us were at least a little bit wet.
After towel drying the pup, I have to admit that he's pretty cute with splotches of dark and light brown fur and droopy ears.
"So, what do you want to name the little guy honey?" I ask as Keith picks up the now clean pup, and his face scrunches up in deep thought for a moment before lighting up with a big smile.
