"What are you doing?" Alex jumped, hard, so hard that she tripped over the cat always prowling at her ankles and fell backward into the broad chest of Jayden Johnson, Alex Carter's best friend since first grade. The cat went scrambling out of the kitchen as it made tortured hisses as if it had been shot.
"Whoa there, clumsy!" Jayden laughed as he held Alex under the arms. He leaned over her and looked into her warm brown eyes, a smirk spread across his lips, his dancing steel blue eyes looking into hers upside down.
"JJ, how did you get into my house?" Alex asked uncertainly,
"Well, the window in the living room was open, so I took that as my welcome to come in." Jayden said, lifting Alex up onto her feet again as if she weighed nothing.
Alex turned to face Jayden, her dark eyebrows narrowed in confusion. Jayden laughed, "Come on. You didn't even laugh!" Jayden exclaimed through a chuckle or disbelief as he lifted himself up off the ground using the kitchens island counted to do so, he slid back until he sat on the counter, resting his elbows on his knees and linking his fingers together as he looked up at Alex through his wavy hair hanging down over his eyes slightly.
Alex couldn't help but notice how that look made her heart jump. Why Jayden was even her friend Alex didn't know. He looked like the stereotypical jock, muscled and handsome. But she was completely invisible, with her golden bronze colored hair, brown eyes, dark eyelashes, and eyebrows. She was plain, at least that's what she thought.
"Haha Jayden, very funny. Did my mom let you in?" Alex said sarcastically.
"Yes, you were too mesmerized with making your eggs you didn't notice." Jayden laughed, his white tooth smile showing through his parted lips. As he said it he waved his fingers in the air jokingly at Alex, rolling his eyes to tease her a bit.
"Oh, knock it off Johnson!" Alex laughed as she shoved Jayden's shoulder softly. Jayden laughed. He secretly thought Alex was gorgeous, and it was true. But she didn't believe that, he knew that for certain."So," Jayden said, clapping his hands together loudly. Alex jumped and put a hand to her heart, looking over at Jayden, her eyebrows raised accusingly. "Sorry." Jayden whispered as he slid off the counter. Alex rolled her eyes as she turned back to the stove where she had been cooking scrambled eggs when Jayden came in.
"Well, can I help fix your chard scrambled eggs?" Jayden asked, looking down to the frying pan where Alex's now burned black scrambled eggs were sizzling.
"No, I'm afraid they have departed to egg heaven." Alex said in a mock reverent tone.
"May they rest in peace." Jayden said, pressing his palms together as if he were praying.
Alex broke into a humorous smile. Jayden did the same, as they both laughed. Jayden took the pan of burned eggs and threw them in the trash.
"Well, I guess there's always plan B." Jayden said.
"What's plan B?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow over at Jayden.
"Of course it's the second of twenty four more backup plans. But plan B stands for bacon."
"Plan Bacon...?" Alex asked, her eyebrows raised.
"Bingo!" Jayden exclaimed. Smiling over at Alex goofily.
"You're such a dork sometimes JJ..." Alex laughed. Jayden flashed an overly dramatic charming smile.
"Thank you." he said, jokingly.A few minutes later both Alex and Jayden were driving to school. Jayden behind the wheel of his old jeep, looking over at Alex occasionally as they talked, faint music playing in the background through Alex's phone.
The two of them immediately stopped talking as they registered the start of their favorite song and Jayden reached over to the volume and cranked it up high.
They both started singing together at the top of their lungs as the stereo blared.
The two of them sang and Alex acted along, dancing hysterically as she sang along. Jayden looked over at her and couldn't help but laugh, she was hilarious. To him there was no one funnier in the whole world.
When the song ended Jayden was still laughing, not able to stop. Alex started laughing with him as she turned down the volume of the music.
She couldn't help but stare at how handsome he really was, his shirt fitting him tight enough to see just how fit he was. His hair in its usual messy but handsome way.
His laugh was handsome too. Everything about him was.
