riley
chapter 8: best friends don't kissI looked past Nick and to Zoe, as I heard a voice I recognized-- but it wasn't Zoe's nor Nick's.
"Who's that?" Nick said, turning to me.
When Nick turned around, it hit me. Some audacity he has to come around here after he broke Zoe's heart. Mother fucker.
"Riley?"
I pushed Nick out of the way and headed straight for Mason, who had one hand on Zoe's locker, preventing her from grabbing her stuff and running.
"How dare you you fucking bitch!? Come around here after sleeping with that snake Paulina and calling Zoe babe!? BABE!? Get your ass away from her and me! If you want her again then give up, fucking bitch! Idiot! Idiot!" I screamed, the hallway falling silent as I punched his chest. Mason just stood there, probably watching in terror. All of a sudden, I felt someone pull me away from Mason. I whirled around to see Nick, who literally was holding me by the waist to stop me.
"Let me go!" I yelled as I struggled to wiggle free.
"Riley, Riley, calm down please. Just tell me who he is, I'll solve it." Nick said, low enough for just me to here.
"He- he's Zoe's ex, he fucking cheated on her!" I exclaimed, sending daggers at Mason. Mason backed away, getting even closer to Zoe. My eyes went from Mason to Zoe, who looked like she was about to have a panic attack. I couldn't take it. I didn't wanna see Zoe like this because of this scumbag. I kicked Nick's shin and charged back towards Mason when Nick let me free.
"Hmph!" Nick yelped, grabbing his shin.
I tackled Mason to the ground, punching his face until my knuckles gave out. That was a surprise, since I swear I couldn't fight for my life. Zoe screamed and tried to get me off, but I was sure as hell I wasn't gonna get off till I saw blood. Luckily for Zoe, his nose began to bleed and he began to plea for me to stop. I stood up, towering over him as I watched him ache and hurt. I liked seeing that bastard like this.
"I have a bit of advice for you. Run. Far far away from me. Do you hear me!?" I barked. Mason scrambled up and ran away towards the end of the hall, without sparing me a look. I felt accomplished. I had saved Zoe, really saved her from that asshole.
I looked around the hall, which had accumulated many people who wanted a scoop on the tea, and then, out of the corner of my eyes, I saw the principal storming out of her office. She was coming for me and she was gonna get me.
Zoe stood there, staring at the ground. I grabbed her wrist and ran with her to the girls bathroom.
Once inside, I looked the door and it was only us there.
"I'm so sorry, I had to do that. When you told me about how they both willing cheated, I was so angry." I said quickly. Zoe looked up and now I could see her face had black tears falling down her face. "Hey... don't cry." I said gently, wiping the tears off her cheeks. She sniffled and I hugged her tightly.
"I-it's ok. But.. I was so worried for you! What if he hit back? D-don't ever do that again." Zoe said, sputtering and sobbing. I nodded and pulled her in for a hug again. After I let her go, I set my bag down on counter and rummaged through it before finding my makeup bag.
"Let's get your makeup fixed, ok?" I asked. Zoe nodded before climbing and sitting on the counter. I opened my bag and brought out some makeup wipes. I wiped her makeup all off which provoked some silly faces from her. I giggled as she got a double chin from moving back as I was about to wipe her eyes. "Come on, stop being fussy!" I joked. She chuckled a bit and let me. Then, I moved on to foundation, which I had to mix a million other products with to get it her right color. She was a bronzed goddess while I looked like Casper. I did her contour, bronze, and highlight. Then I did her eyeshadow, mascara and eyeliner and what was left to do was only lipstick. I grabbed out a pink lipstick I usually used, but I was going to sacrifice for my bestie, before she stopped me.
"Wait." Zoe said, abruptly.
"Hm?" I asked, pausing.
"Let me do this before you put on the lipstick." Zoe said, a smile creeping on her lips. I was a bit confused as her tone sounded so mischievous. I assume she was gonna grab some chapstick and put it on but she leaned in until we were centimeters apart. I could smell her perfume, it filled my nose intensely and I felt desire to pull away but I was also curious on what in the world was happening.
"What're y-"
She sealed the gap between me and her lips, locking me in a kiss. My eyes widened in shock. Did- did she really just do that!?
I shoved her off of me, causing her to hit her back against the wall hard. I just stared at her for a few seconds. Everything was silent. I looked her in the eyes, seeing true disappointment and despair coating her blue eyes, yet I could see a pinch of love in her eyes covered by disappointment and despair.
"Why in the name of hell would you do that!?" I asked harshly.
"I-I like you.." Zoe said quietly, her eyes glazed with tears.
"What the fuck!? No!" I yelled before snatching my things and running out.

"I-I'm straight! I can't like her, Nick!" I said, trying to not be loud as we were in an ice cream shop as an attempt to calm me down and talk."But Riley, I don't think should've been so harsh." Nick said, eating a spoonful of his ice cream. I made a humming sound and placed my spoon down in my cup.
"I panicked.." I said, twirling a strand of hair around my finger.
"Listen, I do too, but you could've thought before you spoke." Nick said. Second thing in common.
"There was just-just so much happening, I didn't know how to comprehend it." I said, trying to hold back the guilt dripping in my voice. Now, one half of me felt bad for doing that to Zoe but the other half felt that she deserved that.
Without me even realizing, Nick slipped from his side of the booth over to me to hug me. I felt a little wave of happiness move through me as I melted in his arms. My face heated up, but that didn't matter. I just wanted this moment to never end.
"It'll be ok. Maybe apologize to Zoe?" Nick asked, pulling away to face me. I shrugged.
"I guess so, but what if she doesn't wanna accept it?" I asked, looking on the negative side of this situation.
"Then, I'll help." Nick said, sliding over a a messily scribbled number on the receipt of our ice cream. A goofy grin spread across my face as I took it in my hand happily. I looked up at him, beaming.
"You're such a good friend."
