chapter 12: apology accepted
"Hmmmmphup," I groaned as my mom walked into my room with a overflowing laundry basket, waking me up. I stretched and like I did every morning, I looked to my right to see my clock that read 8:43. I sprang out of bed which caused my mom to stand there, looking dumbfounded."Woah, what's wrong?" Mom asked.
"I'm late!" I exclaimed, racing towards my dresser.
"Oh," Mom chuckled. "No you aren't. Did you forget you got suspended, young lady? Or did you even read the letter at all?"
I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her, a deadpan expression over my face.
"Seriously!?" I exclaimed, walking back over to my bed and stuffing my face into my pillow.
"Yes, seriously. But hey, that doesn't give you an excuse to laze around all day, especially because of the reason you got suspended. Go do your chores." My mom order. I groaned and pulled the cover closer to me.
"Riley, now." My mom said strictly.
"Come on!" I said, probably coming out muffled.
"Oh ok." My mom said, hearing her footsteps. I turned and looked around to see she had gone. I turned on my side and planned to fall asleep again but hear the familiar jingle of her belt.
"AAAH!" I practically screamed and rocketed out of bed, running to do my chores.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After doing my chores, and even after doing some of my siblings chores too because my mom forced me too, I finally had the time to relax. But something still was wrong. My mind didn't want to go to the whole Zoe situation, but I knew deep down I needed to make it right because I never did apologize. I grabbed my phone from my blankets and searched for her name, finding it and shakily hanging a finger over the dial button.
Come on, you have to.
I pressed the dial button and brought my phone to my ear, waiting. The fear of her not picking up lingered in my mind. Then, my thoughts were interrupted by heavy breathing. Did she pick up!?
"Hello?" I asked.
There was more heavy breathing.
"...Zoe?" I asked, hesitantly.
"Hello." Zoe said coldly. I cringed a bit.
"H-hey Zoe. Um, I need to clear up some things. First things first, I'm truly, from the bottom of my heart, sorry. I reacted wrong, I wasn't thinking. And don't think any of this is your fault. My mind just went into panic mode and I acted without thinking. It was childish of me and I.. um, ask of your forgiveness. I also totally respect your sexuality." I said, choking up. Tears begged to fall out onto my face but I rubbed my eyes quickly. I sniffled.
"Riley..." Zoe said, a heartfelt tone peeking out of her voice. "I-I understand. And maybe I should've waited until the right moment. Some of it is my fault too. But, I forgive you."
I smiled.
"Thank you, so, so much! I don't know what I would do without you in my life." I exclaimed.
"Me either, Park." Zoe said, chuckling.
"Oh hush. But second thing, I um, got suspended for 3 days so I won't be at school. Super sorry, but if you're lonely, just bug Nick!" I said, giggling.
"With pleasure!" Zoe responded.
We spent the rest of the hour talking on the phone, stitching our friendship back together. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my chest and it was so relieving. And yes, I admit, we talked trash about Paulina.
"Well, I gotta go, lunch is over!" Zoe said.
"Oh yea, I totally forgot you were at school." I said. The sound of a creaky door opening was what I heard from the other end of the phone. "What was that?"
"Oh, I was inside the janitors closet while I was talking with you." Zoe said, laughing. I let out a dinosaur sounding screech-laugh.
"Really!?" I exclaimed.
"Yes, really! Gotta go! Mister Diren is yelling at people to get out of the cafeteria!" Zoe exclaimed before her next sentence was cut off by the end of the call. I laughed and just sat there smiling, feeling good about myself, on how I fixed things properly this time.
