You wait for Cara as she finishes washing her face with cold water. You were briefly tempted to taste her tears, but you’d be crossing a line.

She comes out of the bathroom. You’ve never seen her this miserable. Her eyes are red and swollen. Her cheeks are flushed and her parted lips are still trembling.

"Rita must be finishing up." You comment idly as you step out in the warm evening.

She shrugs.

"I told you her boyfriend’s there for her."

"Why did you come, then?" You wonder aloud.

Your hand keeps bumping against hers. It reminds you of those short walks home in the winter when you used to hold hands with her.

"I wanted to see you." She stuffs her hands in her pockets.

You don’t show your disappointment. You’re too busy dwelling on her words. There’s so much you want to say. Yet, you opt for the silence. You feel like you’d ruin her confession with your thoughts.

"Are you coming back in the lounge or are you going backstage?" You ask when you finally reach a point where you can either keep walking together or separate from each other.

She halts. She looks in the direction of the stage and then at you.

"I should probably go to Rita." She shrugs and you hide your disappointment once more.

"I’ll see you later, then." You force a smile and turn to leave.

"Wait–" She cries. Her hand takes a firm hold of your wrist. You heart picks up the pace at the possibility of an impending kiss.

You twist around slowly.

She doesn’t kiss you. You shouldn’t feel disappointed and yet you do.

"Will you–" She clears her throat when the words don’t come out, "–will you have dinner with me?"

You flick your eyes between each blue orb of hers.

"Cara…" You start and she must sense rejection nearing because her shoulders slump down, "I’m having dinner with Charlie–" His name makes her cringe visibly, "–and Matilda."

She looks down nods and contrary to you she doesn’t hide her disappointment.

"You can tag along with us." You search for her eyes and when they finally look up to you, you find her smiling softly. So, you reciprocate.

-

Had you known Charlie and your best friend were practically all over each other you probably wouldn’t have invited Cara. It’ll seem awfully like a double date – at least to you. You should’ve guessed something was up when Matilda wouldn’t stop talking about him or when Charlie would always ask about her. It’s sort of sickeningly cute. But you’re definitely not in the mood to see happy couples interacting.
