The next day, I got dressed with Patience to help me, I had to wear fancier clothes than normal because I was going to the palace. Patience also helped me with my hair, which was good because I could hardly do anything, my hands were shaking with nervousness.

"I hope they like me," I said.

"I'm sure they will," Patience assured me.  "You've always been nice and sweet."

"But maybe they won't think I'm...you know...refined enough."  I said. "My mother often complains that I'm difficult to manage."

Patience laughed. "Maybe that's why I like you so much. You always do what you think, and don't pay any mind to what other people think you should do."

I smiled at her. "I wish you could come with me. I wouldn't be so nervous."

Patience shook her head. "I'd never be asked there, unless it was to serve the food or something."

I frowned. I didn't like that Patience would be treated differently from me, just because I happened to have a rich father. We were really no different from each other.

"I have an idea," I said. "When I have my wedding, I want you to be my bridesmaid. You can't work at the wedding feast because you will be IN the wedding."

Patience smiled but shook her head. "Your mother would have conniptions. Besides, I don't have a dress nice enough."

"You can wear mine, though. I have plenty. Please?" I begged.

"All right, all right," she said. "If you can manage your mother, I will."

"Good," I said happily.

"So...when IS the wedding?" Patience asked.

"I don't know!" I groaned. "I haven't even MET James yet!"

"He's coming, though, isn't he?" she asked. "Before the wedding? I'd hate to think of you walking down the aisle to a stranger!"

"He isn't a stranger exactly," I protested. "We've gotten letters from his family and I know a lot about him."

She looked worried. "I think the whole thing is very exciting, but I also keep thinking I hope you really like each other.  Life would be long when it's with someone you don't really enjoy being with."

"I kind of envy you, Patience. When you get married you can be with someone you like as a person instead of trying to find someone important."

Then I blushed. "Wait that didn't come out right. I don't mean he won't be important as he is. I just meant what...what other people might think of as important..."

I wasn't making this any better, so I just stopped talking. Patience shook her head. "It's ok, I know what you mean. I can find love, real love, not just someone who's got a title or something that family wants you to have. But I hope you will find love in this titled man your family wants you to have. Then you'll have the best of both worlds."

I hugged her tight. "Winnie!" she shouted, yanking herself out of my hug, "I just got you looking perfect and if you crush that taffeta dress I'm going to kill you!"

I pulled away. "Sorry!" I said.

"I know they're your clothes, but I'm the one who looks after them, so you better not mess them up for me!"

"All right, all right," I said. "I'm sorry, I'll be more careful."

She shook her head. "You better be. All right, I think you're ready. Don't spill anything when you eat, I don't want to have stains to wash out later."

"I don't think I'll be able to eat anything at all, I'm too nervous," I told her.

"You'll be fine," she said, giving me a tiny hug despite her concerns over my dress. "Look, there's a carriage out front waiting. They're ready for you."
