When they got to the hotel, Simon told Louis to get some rest and that he would take care of Max. Louis reluctantly obliged and Simon took Max up to his room. Max's voice was hoarse from crying and talking and he wasn't sure what he wanted anymore. Simon sat on the sofa and placed Max on top of him with his legs held by Simon’s left hand and his head propped up against the arm of the sofa, wrapped also in Simon's other arm and pulled tight to Simon's chest. After Max's pleas died down Simon began to talk to him again.
“Tell me the advantages of ending it now.” He started. Although Louis hadn't told him Max was suicidal Simon knew as soon as he turned up and heard the way Max was talking. Max spoke brokenly with a croaky voice.
“The pain will stop now and it can't ever start again.” Simon nodded.
“What about the disadvantages?” He prompted. Max shrugged.
“I guess I'll live to be older, I don't know.” He sighed. Simon finished for him.
“You won't ever sing again, you won't ever get to go any further on the X factor, you won't ever get to play guitar, me and Louis won't ever be able to get to know you better, you won't ever be able to get to a successful point where you can say, look how far I've come. You won't be able to do anything, ever.” Max looked up at him.
“How am I supposed to know who really cares when all I've ever been is hurt?” Simon smiled at him sympathetically,
“Did you see Louis? See him crying?” Max nodded guiltily.
“If people don't hurt me I just hurt them.” Max whispered tears welling up in the young boys eyes again.
“Hey, that's not why I pointed it out. He cares about you, he's just worried. You haven't hurt anyone, you're only hurting yourself by thinking that.” Simon continued in his same calm state. Max shook his head and let a stray tear roll down his cheek.
“If I was never born, nothing would have happened. My mum would still be here and she would be happy. I wouldn't have been hurt and you and Lou wouldn't have to worry about me.” Simon pulled him even closer. “You're here for a reason Max. Everyone is. Do you remember how everyone was clapping and stood up for you when you sang at your audition?” Max nodded smiling slightly, remembering the morning and how much it meant to him. “That's why you're here. So many people were upset that you didn't carry on. You have such amazing potential okay? That windows open to you, don't close it because you feel you have to go the other way.” Max's mind was cast back by Simon's words to the song he always used to sing about his Mum and the one Louis had sung earlier that night to him. Some sort of window to your right as he goes left and you stay right.
