"No, mom, I know I'm okay. I'm not depressed I promise."

"But you're always alone. You've never had any friends that I've known, anyways. Don't you rely on anyone? You need friends mi hijo."

"Mamá, don't worry about me—"

"But I do Mateo," she cut me off which made me grimace. "You are just a young boy! Don't let your life get away from you now! Do something with it!"

"Mamá I am seventeen years old. I am not a little boy. I can make decisions for myself. I am fine." She glared at me with a look that said quite strongly, "Mateo, you know better than to backtalk and disrespect your Mamá." I sighed in resolution before giving in. "If it makes you happy I'll find some friends, ok Mamá?"

"Oh niño, that would be nice." She smiles at me and then squeals in excitement. "Please do find some good friends. Oh I'm so excited!"

With that my mother went off to bed happily for the first time in a long time. She's sort of childish at times like this, but it would be unfair to judge. My papá died in a car accident five years ago and the stress and pain never left my mamá. I got over it because I had to. Because if I didn't push my mamá to keep trying every day she wouldn't have made it.

After my mamá is in bed and I hear her snoring I quickly follow suit to my own bed, but without a single thought of sleep.

I pulled the crane out of my pocket and stared at it. I pulled on the wings carefully for I was scared I might break it. I noticed, however, that this was really rather impossible. "Where the hell did you come from?" I asked the crane. "How did they make you? How did I find this? And how come I haven't seen more of you around?" The crane stared back at me quietly, refusing to answer. But it was, of course, only a small piece of folded paper.
