Once I get home I pull out my phone, take a deep breath, and click the button to write a message to a new person for like the first time in my life. "Hi," I text my fingers shaking. About thirty seconds later I receive a message back.
Journey: How did u get my number???
Mateo: Ryan and George gave it to me.
Journey: who's this????
It hits me hard right then that of course she doesn't know who is texting her.
Mateo: Mateo. Your friend.
Journey: oh
Journey: hi mateo
Journey: whadda you want???
Mateo: I am sorry for not sitting with you today. I can tell it hurt you. I'll be sure to sit with you again tomorrow.
Journey: no need. It's all cool
I sit there staring at her response. "Maybe it's time to just stop typing back," I think to myself. However, just as I am putting my phone down a thought passes my mind.
Mateo: Do you make those cranes
Journey: yes
Journey: I AM CRANE GIRL
Journey: ALL MUST BOW DOWN BEFORE ME
Mateo: um...
Journey: sorry
Journey: but yes, its me. You got me!
Mateo: What do you mean?
Journey: I'm trying to keep the fact that I'm the one folding the cranes a secret.
Mateo: why?
Journey: cause
Mateo: cause why?
Journey: cause I have that right.
Mateo: oh...
Mateo: okay
There is a long pause.
Journey: Mateo
Mateo: yes
Journey: I have cancer
Journey: A brain tumor
Journey: I thought you should know
I have to re read her words six or seven times before I can really understand what she just told me. Once I do. I put down my phone, open the door, go outside, and run.
