Here is a list of 10 essential tips on writing:
1. Write every day. Whether it's one sentence to a whole chapter, anything you get down on the page will eventually build up into a fantastic chapter or book.
2. Make sure your writing is effective. Remember that the audience can only picture what you write down. So if you're thinking of a massive snowy forest and you just write forest then they might get the wrong idea as to what setting you're trying to convey. Make sure what you write is thought provoking.
3. Don't be lazy; do your best to avoid sounding stupid. When I write I always have tabs open with "words to say instead of said" or thesaurus.com, these can be so useful when describing dialogue or anything really. Make sure your description makes sense but doesn't just turn the readers brain into mush.
4. Stay focused! Distraction is the enemy of all great art. This one speaks for itself really. If you have trouble focusing on just writing and are constantly checking notifications, then go on airplane mode and write on docs. I guarantee you'll get a lot more done. I've heard ommwriter is a good website to checkout.
5. Stop worrying about being a good writer; just write. If you're always comparing yourself to other writers, on wattpad, AO3 or even published authors, then you are never going to have the confidence to grow as a writer. As long as you just write to the best of your ability then you'll always been improving.
6. Forget about fame; write what's worth writing. A lot of people on this site just write crap to get votes, reads and followers but is that all worth it? You'll only feel successful once you've put in the time and effort to your work. No one gets 100k reads over night. Stop worrying about how last chapter got 30 votes but your new one only got 15, in the end it doesn't really matter.
7. Get over your perfectionist tendencies. Nobody has perfected writing! Nobody! Not J.K. Rowling, not William Shakespeare and not George R.R. Martin. Writing is an art and there is no perfect way to do it. People tend to believe that there are a certain set of rules for writing, rules for grammar, rules for punctuation but some people disagree. Although, I am not much of a descriptivist, I do believe writing has no boundaries and you're allowed to write whatever your heart desires!
8. Don't write to get published. Most of you have probably watched or heart about the movie 'The Kissing Booth', this book was written in 2011 on this very site and I bet you she did not write this book with the intention it'd get published a few years later and turn into one of the biggest rom coms of 2018. Write what you want! Not what you think other people will want or what you think publishing companies are looking for because that way you will probably never get published.
9. Writer's block is normal. It happens to every writer. It's inevitable. Your prose has turned to mush, you don't have a creative bone left in your body, and you want to throw in the towel. Many reasons could be the timing, you're afraid, or you're being overly critical. Unfortunately, there is no formulaic fix but there are many things you could do to try and overcome it, such as: going for a walk, read a book, listen to music you wouldn't normally listen to, create a daily routine, or spend sometime doing some basic planning of your chapters before you write.
10. READ!!!! Personally, this is the most helpful thing. I have learnt so many things from reading books and you even pick up stuff unconsciously. Reading is only beneficial. Maybe I'll do a recommendation list one day, who knows.
