I open the door quietly and slip into the classroom. The teacher is saying something while writing on the whiteboard. Good. No one will notice me silently get in my seat and-
WHAM!
I wince as the door slams shut. Everyone looks at me, including the teacher.
"Well well," she says, glaring at me through her thick glasses "Look who's late again. Min. Min, would you care to explain?"
I look at the floor. "My car broke down so I had to get a ride from a friend."
"What friend?"
I look across the room at Jimin. He smiles at me and nods.
"Jimin," I mutter.
"Then explain to me why Mr. Park was on time, but you were not."
"I-I-um-well-you see-"
"Enough." She sighs. "Please see me after class, Annabelle."
I nod and walk to my desk. Luckily, it's in the back, so she can't see me sleep.
"No Annabelle. I would like you to sit up here for the day." She points to the seat right next to her desk.
Everyone snickers and whispers as I pass them. I throw my bag onto the ground and sit down. The teacher continues to teach, but keeps glancing over at me. Oh boy. This is going to be a long day.
...
The bell rings for the end of class and I shoot out of my seat. I grab my bag and try to sneak out with the crowd of people leaving the classroom.
"Annabelle." I freeze. "Come here."
I sigh and turn around. "Yes, Mrs. Chen?"
The teacher smiles. "I understand that you're struggling with my class."
"Not struggling," I correct. "Just choosing not to do it."
"I've also been told that your tutor quit," she continues, ignoring my comment.
I groan. Not today.
"I'm still trying to find you a new tutor," Mrs. Chen says. "In the meantime, you will work hard, stay away, and stay off your phone."
Damn. How did she know? I'm sure that I hid it pretty good.
"I also want you to work with your friend while you wait."
I frown. "I'm sorry, but I have no friends, in case you haven't noticed."
"You just said that your friend gave you a ride to school this morning."
I swallow. "Oh. That friend. Um, right. I'll ask him for help. Can I go now?"
Mrs. Chen sighs. "Yes, you may go. I'll give you a tardy slip."
She jots down some stuff down on a post-it note and hands it to me.
"Thank you," I mumble, then speed out of the room to my next class.
...
Instead of going to my next class, Chemistry, I head outside. No one will notice that I'm missing. I climb over the rusty fence surrounding the school and walk out to the huge field. There's a small building in the middle. I head there.
As soon as I get there, a deep voice says, "What are you doing here?"
I turn around. A tall man with messy brown hair and attractive brown eyes glares at me.
Are you kidding me? I think. Today is just not my day!
I try for a smile. "Hi Namjoon!" I say cheerfully. "I was just-"
"Save it," he growls. "You're coming with me."
He grabs my wrist and drags me back towards the school.
"Yah!" I shout. "Where are we going?!"
"You're going back to class," he says. "Where I'm going is none of your business."
I dig my heels into the ground, pulling Namjoon to a stop.
"I am not going back there," I say. "You can't make me."
He growls and throws me into the fence. I gasp as the sharp, rusted metal slices into my cheek and hands. I feel blood start to drip down my arms, down my neck.
"You know what, I don't care." Namjoon turns away. "Stay away from me, brat."
As he walks off, I stand and struggle to climb back over the fence. The metal bites into my cuts, and I whimper in pain. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Namjoon glance back, then smirk and walk away. I continue to struggle, ignoring the cold metal digging into my hands.
I finally manage to get over. I look at the clock on my phone, and a little blood gets on the screen. I wipe it off with my shirt. There's still time to get back to class. I dash inside and over to my Chemistry class.
Everyone looks at me as I walk to the front of the class. I hand the teacher my tardy excuse note. He looks a little worried as he eyes the spots of blood on it. Ignoring the stares, i walk to my seat.
"Hey, are you okay?"
I look at the person sitting next to me. He's an attractive boy with blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes. His name starts with a T or J, I think. He rarely ever talks to anyone, so I don't know for sure.
"Mind your own business," I mutter, turning away.
"You should go clean up in the bathroom," he continues.
"Just leave me alone, punk."
He blinks and looks down at his desk. "Right. Sorry."
I stare at the teacher as he begins to teach the class again. Every so often, he glances my way. I roll my eyes and pull out my phone. I know that he can see me, but he doesn't say anything. This is going to be boring.
The teacher walks up to me. "Miss. Min, are you okay?"
I look up at him and smile. "Yes. Thanks for asking."
He kneels down next to the desk. "You sure? You know you can tell me. I won't tell anyone."
"Yes, I'm sure." I sigh. "Class is almost over. Just let me deal with my own problems and let me leave."
The teacher hesitates, then stands up. "Alright class! Homework is due next class! You are free to roam around the classroom until the bell rings!"
Everyone stands up and walks over to their friends. Voices fill the room. I glance over at the kid next to me. He's still looking at his desk, not moving.
I nudge him. "Why aren't you with your friends?"
He looks up. "I don't have any friends."
I snort. "Yeah right."
He shakes his head. "You don't understand. No one likes me. They think I'm strange. Like something is wrong with me."
"Well, is there?" He frowns. I laugh. "Just kidding. You seem pretty nice. I would hang out with you, but it would probably ruin your reputation. Sorry."
The bell rings. I wave goodbye to the mystery kid and walk out of the room.
