Chapter Nine

I know who you are

The next morning, the sunrise was more beautiful than ever. Light red, pink and faded gold covered the sky as Zander sat next to Abigail's bed thinking about what he would say when she woke up. He just couldn't get his head wrapped around the thought of her being the next heir to a dragon throne. Abigail opened her eyes and looked up at Zander.

"Zander, what's wrong?" Abigail asked as she wiped the morning sleep from her eyes. Zander had his head in his hands and was just looking down. "I... I... how? Abigail why?" he stumbled with his words.

"What's wrong Zander, what did I do?" Abigail didn't know what was going on but she could tell that Zander was disturbed about something.

Zander looked straight into her face. "I know why those men were after us, they were really after you, right?" Zander's face got a serious looked to it, "I know who you are Abigail."

Those words made Abigail's heart stop and her breath catch at her throat, she began to cry. She was hoping that she could live a normal life here with Zander and Arthur without anyone finding out who she really is. But now that Zander knew the truth, he would... that's just it, she didn't know how he would react, but she knew that she was going to find out.

"What's wrong with me knowing the truth Abigail? What are you afraid of?" Zander asked with a loving smile.

Abigail responded with just one word, "SETH!!!!"

The name gave her an awful taste in her mouth as she said it. "He is the one who sent those men after me. He was the man that gave me this cut," Abigail said while pointing to the cut on her forehead. "He was the man at the gates that cut my head yesterday. He will be the man who will..." Abigail paused. She looked down at the floor, took a deep breath and swallowed her fear, "who will kill me." After she said that, she lifted her head slowly and looked him in the eyes.

He could see that she was terrified of this man. It was written all over her face. Zander knew that it was Seth that was causing the nightmares that she has been having.

"Is he responsible for the attack on your village?"

"No, he wasn't responsible for the attack on my village, but he did know where to find me. And somehow he knew that I would be in the marketplace."

Nothing made sense to her and just trying to think about it, gave her a big headache. She remembered back to what Seth said as he cut her forehead. It was just like she was there all over again, hearing the last words he had spoken to her....

"I will make you remember why you should never cross me. You will fear me and you will always know that I am watching you and, if you tell anyone our little secret, I will kill them and destroy all that is dearest to you."

As Abigail remembered those words, she reached up, touched the cut on her head and sobbed even harder as she covered her mouth.

"What's the matter, Abigail?" Zander asked as he moved forward a little.

Abigail looked into Zander's eyes and quietly said, "I have said too much...and now he will come after you because you know who and what I am. That is what he does; he kills anyone who knows who I really am."

Abigail jumped to Zander and wrapped her arms around him in a big hug. "I love it here with you and Arthur, Hector, and the king and queen. I don't want to ever leave. Seth is going to come back and try to take me again. He's not going to rest until he gets what he wants. I don't want to go with him. He's a horrible man and he scares me but I don't want any of you to get hurt because of me. Maybe I should just leave!" Abigail was so heartbroken she didn't know what to do.
