Under the Dome: Chapter 1
"But I want to drive!" My teenage sister Jordan yelled at our snotty step-mom Tamara. "You can drive as long as I can bring my Bud Lite beers." Tamara said in a bratty manner. "Fine!" Jordan snapped as she rolled her eyes. "But Jordan you're only sixteen, are you allowed to have alcohol in the car with you?" I exclaimed. "Who cares?" Tamara yelled as she grabbed the beer from the fridge in the garage. "Well then I get shotgun!" I said smirking. Tamara dragged her feet in the car as I jumped in the front seat. Jordan started the car as we drove to the town of Virginia Beach. Our house lay literally ten minutes, plus another minute or two because of the Artesia and Santa Fe road stop light, from the Virginia Beach- Norfolk city borders. After sitting in the car for about ten minutes I finally said anxiously, "Jordan hurry up we have to get to the surf competition on time. We already wasted enough time going on back roads and five miles an hour lower than the speed limit!" I shouted with sarcastic anger. Jordan quickly glanced at me before concentrating back on the road, "Shut up Hunter I'm driving!" she said. I sunk into my seat a little more, but then saw the border sign. "Here is the sign! Jordan and I will be in Virginia Beach and Tamara, um, mom," I said mom with hesitant in my voice." will be in Norfolk." Tamara put her right foot on the armrest in the front seat and nudged my elbow off. She pulled out her third beer before saying, "Does it look like I care?" Jordan and I passed the border and I instantly grew even antsier about the surfing competition. I then heard a huge shaking noise and a crash as loud as a jet. Jordan and I rocked back and forth from the vibrations. I heard a faint noise, just barely audible. We looked back and saw Tamara's foot was cut off from the rest of her leg. A huge giant piece of glass stood in front of us. I started to put my hand out to touch the glass but Jordan pulled it away. "Don't touch it you fool! Come on let's get out of this car and find some help." We pushed the doors open and saw two people running towards the two of us. "Hey! Help!" We both shouted as we began running towards the people, but were interrupted by an explosion. Jordan and I were thrown foreword onto the black asphalt. One of the two people picked me up as I was barely able to whisper, "Tamara."
My eyes fluttered opened and I saw basic white walls. "Brandon the boy's waking up!" I sat up and quickly scanned the room. I sat on a couch with a flower pattern, the curtains were filled with flowers, and everywhere I looked there was a flower in a vase. I basically felt like I was sitting on a park bench in Norfolk's Botanical Gardens. Two people now stood hovering (rhetorically speaking) over me. "What's your name?" They both questioned. "Where's Jordan?" I demanded looking left and right, hoping to find a trace of her. The boy, apparently Brandon, looked at me and said, "She ran off to the glass to find someone named Tamara." I looked at the two teens, clearly twins. The girl had dirty blond hair in a French braid and seemed to have had blush on her cheeks and was wearing eyeliner. The boy also had dirty blond hair and his hair had the typical teenage boy swoosh. "Um, I'm Faith Trone and this is my brother Brandon. We're about to go to the beach to pick up my parents. They were volunteering at the surf competition." I looked into the two kids eyes; they looked about a year older than me. "Does anyone know what the heck is going on here?" I asked. "We tried finding out but the TV is only showing static and, we kind of need your sister to drive us." They started walking away, obviously trying to avoid more questions. "Hold on! How were you guys going to get to the beach if my sister and I weren't here?" I questioned with confidence. "The HRT bus stop. All we have to do is cut through the forest directly across our house. Are we done here?" Brandon said annoyed. "Yeah. Sorry I'm coming." We walked outside and I finally got a look at the glass from a far distance. Faith and Brandon's house was a little farm next to the glass. Their shed, barn, and a couple cows were on the other side of the glass. However, on our side were some more cows, their horse stable, and pig and chicken pens. Jordan came sprinting up to us. "Why hasn't any police been coming to help us on this side? Tamara was taken by someone like fifteen minutes ago and people are herding up outside" She questioned in an anxious way. "Most police were at the beach." Brandon said. "And Virginia Beach has only two police stations, one firefighter station, and one main hospital." Faith said piggy-backing off her brother. "I tried touching the glass and it's pretty solid. It smashed right through our car." Jordan answered. "Um, we need to get to the beach now to get our parents. Can you drive?" Brandon announced. Jordan nodded and we jumped into the Trone's car and began driving to the beach. We drove through town and saw many people hustling about. "I think we should stock up on food, water, and all other necessities just in case." I said looking at people at one of the town's two grocery stores. "Yeah sure after we get my parents." Faith said. "When you guys said you tried the TV, shouldn't the glass have cut through the power lines? How did you guys get power?" I asked the twins. "Most power lines are underground in Virginia Beach. Whereas Norfolk's power lines are mostly aboveground." Faith said as she began twirling her French braid. "Oh my God! Faith's got a little crush." Brandon stated smirking. "Shut up!" Faith exclaimed as she immediately looked away and out the window. I felt a smile creep into the corners of my mouth, as I quickly looked away to avoid Brandon's wrath. We approached the beach and Jordan parked the car. We then all ran towards the boardwalk since many people were already crowded around that area. "What's going on James?" Brandon said to another child. "Nobody knows! My older sister, Liz, is on the other side of the glass." He pointed to another teen with her hands pressed up against the glass. "The whole beach is cut off from us!" James said in a panic voice. One of my friend's dad said this glass goes all the way around us. We're trapped" Faith rushed over to James and shouted, "Have you seen our parents?" "No sorry," James answered. Brandon began running down the sidewalk obviously looking for his parents. Faith, Jordan, and I followed him as he quickly ran towards the glass and pressed his hands on the glass like Liz was doing. A man stood on the other side of the glass on the boardwalk. Faith then also went next to Brandon. "Dad! Are you okay? Where's mom!" The man put his hand to his ear signaling he can't hear Faith. "Derek! Are you okay! Where is mom?" Brandon yelled spacing out every word. "Mom left to go to the car!" Derek mouthed. Faith and Brandon nodded as an explosion suddenly happened not far from us. Derek slightly rocked back and forth from the explosion, but Jordan, Faith, Brandon, and I stood perfectly still. I ran over to the explosion and saw it was on the other side of the glass. A man, named Adam, lay on the boardwalk missing a hand and part of his arm. "EVERYONE BACK AWAY!" Officer Mary Annet yelled as she began putting the yellow police tape up. "Hey Officer you want to tell us what the heck is going on!" Someone shouted. "Yeah!" said many people. "Listen I don't know any more than you guys know. I'm the only policeman on this side of the glass in our unit. The other police unit was out at training in Williamsburg. I called in Officer Chris and Leo from their day off. If everyone could just go home that would be perfect," Out of nowhere three gunshots rang out. I grabbed Jordan and brought her down to the ground. Jax slumped down to the ground, with three bullets pierced in his chest. Liisa stood near on the road with a gun pointed at the glass. "Jordan," I began saying, "The glass rebounded the bullets!" I whispered frightened. "I know Hunter." she answered. Officer Mary stood up and brought out her handcuffs. "Come on!" Mary cuffed Liisa and brought her walkie talkie out, "22nd street we need clean-up of a dead body." I couldn't believe I had just witnessed a death. My head felt woozy as I sat down next to Jordan. Many people were too busy crowded around Jax's dead body to see the next deadly challenge , heading right for the beach.
