On the beach:
"Okay, is everyone ready?" Derek asked the three other men who were brave enough to try and bust out of this box. The Oceanfront beach had been split into eight sections when the box first came down, trapping an average of fifty people per section. Eighteen people remained alive in section 4 where the weather was still sunny and scorching, but as resources dwindled the group had to find an escape route or starve to death. The four men had constructed a small raft made out of the plane wreckage. They planned to paddle the boat far enough to where the box wasn't trapping them. The four men hopped on the raft, waved to the fourteen men, women, and children on shore, and began to paddle. The waves proved to be a dangerous challenge for the group, knocking off members and pushing them back towards the shore, until, finally, the group made it past the waves breaking point. As the group continued farther and farther away from the shore, clouds began to form on top of the travelers. "They" did not like the four men reaching their barriers. Out of anger, "they" created a wave in the calm of the ocean. The wave tipped the raft over and the four men were thrown into the water. Derek struggled to stay afloat and yelled to his companions, "Jeff! Gregg! Richard! Wait please!" The three men couldn't wait to get out of the box, all craving food, so instead of helping Derek, they began to swim towards the barrier, unknowingly. Derek grabbed the overturned raft and watched his three friends swim with a passion towards the barrier. The first man to hit the barrier was Gregg, followed by Jeff, and then Richard. All three men were astounded by what they were feeling, another glass wall. Richard hit the glass, yelling with anger. Gregg and Jeff soon followed, furious with their findings. With all three men touching the barrier simultaneously, "they" decided it was time. "They" sent electricity through the barrier and the three men were taken by surprise. The three men began twitching in the water from the electrocution all of them were receiving. When "they" realized the men had been electrocuted to death, "they" sent a final burst of energy and the dead corpses went flying out of the water to land back on the beach. Now, only fifteen people remained in section 4, a perfect amount "they" thought to begin Phase Two
My leg kicked a pine cone on the side of the road and it ricocheted off of Clara's Vans. "Hey!" She shouted. I mouthed sorry at her as we continued following Clara to the sewage pipes or Faith to the Oceanfront, I didn't know nor did I care. I didn't think Jordan was going to live, nobody had ever recovered from the disease. A black mustang zoomed towards us before stopping right next to us. It was Dr. Radin. "Any news?" Grey asked. "We've run out of water from the city's supply. Our only option is to take water from Lake Gaston, the only fresh water around. We continued walking when Clara stopped. "Why aren't we going?" Brandon asked politely. "This is the sewage drain I went into." Clara responded. "BUT THE OCEANFRONT IS SO CLOSE!" Faith cried out, pointing at the beach, only a block away. "It's okay Faith if we can find a way out of this trap we can get dad out!" Brandon said talking to Faith. We all climbing into the sewers easily, except for Lauren who is deeply claustrophobic, but somehow worked her way into the sewers. It seemed like we had been walking for about thirty minutes in a damp, smelly sewer, when something actually happened. Clara and Lauren were walking in front of the pack, probably gossiping, followed by Grant and Grey, and then Faith, Brandon, and me. Clara left Lauren only to ask Grant a question. Suddenly, Lauren dropped to the sewer ground and fell off the walkway, into the water. "Holy crap!" I shouted. Grey was directly behind Lauren and went after her only to go limp also and fall into the water. "Oh, chiz guys hold up!" Clara said. "I see it!" Brandon shouted. "What?" I demanded. "It's a wavy line, kinda like a forcefield!" He said surprisingly in a happy manner. The five of us stood there in silence for about ten minutes thinking about what to do when our question was answered. A whole team of people dressed in quarantine jackets came up and put Lauren and Grey on stretchers. "Hey! Wait!" I screamed. "Guys don't go over the force field thing," Brandon shouted. Clara pulled out her ladybug phone, which only dialed her parents and 911 and wasn't connected to a landline. "Hello. Are Officer Mary or Chris available? Chris is! Okay, thanks. The sewer. ok, Artesia. Yes, the sewers. Hurry up, please. Yes, I'll take photos." She closed her phone and told us that Officer Chris was coming. Clara snapped a few photos, which caught the attention of the men in suits. The four men holding both stretchers left while two men stayed behind. I looked inside their masks and noticed one man moving his mouth. "Delete pictures" he screamed. The other man took his mask off and I read his lips. "Delete the pictures" He demanded. We all shook our hands as Faith mouthed back. "Not until you give us our friends back." The man without a mask, looking furious, charged towards us. He went past the force field and went straight to Clara's phone. she pulled it back just in time and the man slipped on the sewer floor. Clara began running away from the man, and Brandon, Faith, Grant, and I quickly followed. "COME BACK HERE!" The man shouted. He stumbled up and began chasing us. "Go! Go! Go!" Grant yelled. The man, obviously not in shape, was no match for the middle school athletes and he slowly pulled away. Sometime after decreasing to a jog, Brandon, now in front, bumped into Officer Chris. "Hey, what's going on!" He shouted. "These six men behind the force field took Lauren and Grey and now one man is chasing after us because we took pictures of them." Faith mumbled into between breaths. "Force field? Okay fine, let us go take a look." Chris said shocked. We jogged back towards the force field with Officer Chris in front, gun in hand. We made it all the way back to the force field with no sight of life until we arrived at the spot where Lauren and Grey were taken. The man who pursued us laid sprawled on the floor on the opposite side of the force field. Almost in sync with our arrival, the men in suits arrived again, minus one. They put the collapsed man on a stretcher and carried him away, into the darkness.
Outside the box:
"Thank you so much for choosing Sentara Hospital. Have a good day." I wheeled myself out of the hospital, glad to be free. It had been eight, lonely days since the box came down and I lost my step-children. Two days after the box, my roommate Timothy was cleared out of the hospital, leaving me alone for my surgery. Dr. Cynthia and Victor has prepared my leg to be fit for a prosthetic. Unfortunately, all resources were being rationed for the box. I hit the crosswalk button and waiting for the red hand to turn into a white person. "Tamara!" I heard someone shout. I spun my wheelchair to the left and saw Timothy coming out of a bagel shop across the street. I went across the crosswalk and hugged Timothy. He had dark bags underneath his eyes that sagged with depression. "How are you doing?" He asked me.
"Alright. I just got cleared from the hospital. Any news on Lindsey and your boy?"
"My boy is in West Virginia with my parents, I wanted to get him far away from the box, and I'm seeing Lindsey in two days on Visitors Day!" Timothy shouted.
"What's Visit-" My sentence was cut off by a massive explosion coming from the hospital. My wheelchair and I were thrown forward onto the sidewalk. My head did an 180-degree turn and I gasped. The hospital was in flames, blown up by a group that had been hiding in the shadows for decades, seeking revenge, and now ready to do anything it takes to destroy and kill.
