I walked downstairs, seeing Austin and his mom already standing in the hallway talking with my mother. “Well, let’s go eat lunch then”, my mom said, as she noticed me on the stairs. She leaded the way to the dining room and we all walked in, sitting to the table, my mom next to Michele and Austin fortunately next to me. After everyone had taken some of the spaghettis, my mother had made, I did so too, but tried to take as less as possible. Fortunately I didn’t have to take some of the sauce, since I was vegetarian and there was meat in it. I ate really slowly and bit everything thoroughly, so I won’t finish before everyone else, even though I had less than them.

“Don’t you want some of the sauce?”, Austin asked kindly, looking at my plate. Before I could answer my mother did it for me.

“Gabby is vegetarian.”

“Really? For how long?”, Austin asked me curiously.

“Well, since I was 12, so 3 years already”, I told him proudly. Being vegetarian is probably the only thing about me, I’m really proud of. I’m so glad, that I can say I actually saved some animals with not eating meat.

“Wow, that’s impressive! I think I couldn’t even make one week without meat”, Austin grinned at me.

“Oh, it’s actually not that hard at all. At least not for me”, I said, smiling at him.

My mom and Michele seemed to really like each other, since they didn’t stop talking once, during lunch. They literally talked about everything, you could imagine.

After a few minutes of picking at my only half-eaten portion of spaghettis, Austin poked me slightly to get my attention.

“Are you ready?”, he asked as I looked up in his eyes. I nodded and stood up, taking both of our plates and carrying them to the sink.

“Gabby, it’s okay. I’ll do the dished later. Why don’t you and Austin go upstairs in your room?”, my mom said as I was about to fill the sink with water.

“Okay mom.” With that I walked up to Austin and grabbed his hand to drag him upstairs in my room.

I sat on my bed awkwardly, while Austin looked around my bedroom. “Your room is actually pretty nice”, he said and turned around to me with a big smile on his face.

“Why, that’s very kind of you to say, sir”, I tried to imitate a British accent, but failed really badly. Austin just laughed at me, but stopped as his eye got caught up by something in the corner of my room – an old guitar.

“You’re playing guitar?”, he asked me curiously and walked up to it.

“Not a bit. My dad used to play it, before he died. I kept it as some kind of memory of him”, I explained, my voice sounding really sad by the thought of my dad. He died in a car crash when I was only 8 years old. I usually didn’t bring him up while talking with someone, especially not when this someone is a stranger I’ve only met a few hours ago.

But to be honest, it actually didn’t feel like I had just met Austin – it felt more like I’ve known him for my whole life. I felt like I could tell him everything without even thinking about it.

Austin ripped me out of my thoughts with sitting down next to me and laying one arm around my shoulder.

“I’m so sorry for you! I know exactly how you feel”, he said and squeezed my shoulder slightly, remembering me at his own dad, who died on stomach cancer, like Austin told me. I laid my head down on his shoulder and poured my heart out to him.
