Everyone stops, turns and stares as the new kid comes in. I take in his profile, his curly black hair, pointy ears, cheerful, babyish face, and a mischievious smile that told you straight away that the kid couldn't be trusted. And his long, nimble fingers, will not stop moving! He is always moving them around, always fiddling with something, whether his buttons or even his other fingers.
"Well, all right!" He says. "I hear this is the party cabin!"
Nobody laughs. It would be enough to make me smile if it wasn't for the curse. I don't bother to look around to know what people are thinking: 'Welcome to cabin nine kid! We have a dangerous dragon on the loose, and a curse! Have fun! Get cut to peices with the sword you just made!' Yep, it would be pretty funny, if it wasn't so true.
I see his face become serious, he can see we are not the joking type, especially at this very moment.
Will Solace patts the kids shoulder. "I'll leave you to get aquainted. Somebody show Leo to dinner when it's time?" So that is what his name is? Not that I care that much, even though he is my half brother. It isn't really that surprising, the gods are known to sleep around.
"I've got it." I call, walking up to him as Will walks off.
I watch as Leo's eyes casually roam my body up and down. I feel ashamed, and start to begin to wonder if my choice of army boots, camo pants, red tank top, and bandanna to hold my dark brown hair back, was the right one. I shake the feeling off, I don't care what impression I give anyone, so why him. He just feels different. He is different. And that is saying something. Everyone here is different, we are all demigods, but he, he is really something.
"Cool," Leo says, "I've always wanted a sister who could beat me up." I sigh, this kid really doesn't get it.
"C'mon joker boy. I'll show you around."
We walk past the Aprhrodite cabin, everyone is out in the sunshine. I see Leo's eyes stare at the girls, and see his desire to walk on over there. I grab his arm and pull him away.
"You don't want to go over there." I say, quickly averting my gaze and letting go of his arm. He nodds, sensing the tension, and for which, I am grateful for.
"What is wrong with them?" He asks, all to innocently. I can tell he wants to just run over there, trust me, the guys are hard enough to resist.
"Our parents have always argued, and we have been picked on ever since Aphrodite pushed Hephaestus off a cliff, because he was too ugly." I watch as he cringes at the thought. I feel sorry for the kid, stuck with cabin nine. First day and already without even meeting people he has enemies.
I point across the green, towards our cabin.
"That's our cabin right over there." I watch as his eyes take in the complex door system. I open the door and wait for him, while he watches the complex door system.
"Cool." He mutters in astonishment. I completely agree with him, I remember when I first saw the doors too. And even now they are still mesmerising to look at.
"Welcome, to cabin nine." I say, waving Leo in, and closing the door behind us.
"I'll let you meet our cabin leader." I say as I weave around the beds. I come to the last bed,
"Hey Jake, this is Leo, our new cabin member." I watch as Jake painfully tries to lift his head to meet his half brother. I want to push him back down, but know Jake will keep trying. I say bye to both boys before walking back out.
I walk out into the forest. I know the camp rules say that no one is allowed to go in on their own, but I need to find that dragon. I walk, trusting my instincts to tell me which way to go. I finally stop near a stream, for a drink of water and to get out my map. I look at all the places where we have set traps.
"Stupid dragon." I say out loud to myself. I hear a loud snap of branches somewhere to my left. I get up slowly, leaving my map on the ground, and stare in the direction of the noise. A robot dragon face stares back at me, its red eyes glowing furiously. Oh shit. I sprint in the opposite direction, not caring which way I go. I just need to get away. My heart thumps wildly in my chest and I am gratefull for being a fast runner. I jump down a three metre high rock, and twist my ankle. I grasp my ankle, in the cover of the rock and hope the dragon will not find me. No such luck. It spots me, and breaths fire. I scramble away with singed hair and clothes, and coughing.
I run blindly, the smoke from my singed clothes making my eyes water, and my lungs burn. I feel myself fall sideways, and it feels like forever before I hit the ground. Something snaps from under me, and flings me up in the air. Great, now I am really dead. I feel the tough ropes that are keeping me suspended, and grab out my pocket knife. The knife I can never quite part with, the one that my mum always carried, the one she used for everything, the one she died with. I fling open the blade with a swift movement and begin cutting at the ropes. I hear the dragon getting closer, and I hack at the rope faster. The rope snaps, leaving a hole just big enough for me. It is a tight fit, but it is amazing what you can do with adreneline. I run wildly away from the dragon. The bushes get thinner and the trees further away. I know I must be getting near a clearing, so I keep running straight ahead. Even with my eyes blurry I can make out the bonfire against the pitch black night, and hear the cheers from my fellow campers. Funny how time flies when one is busy. I look up at the moon, the bonfire should be over. I look back towards the bonfire and see people moving off. I take a step towards the light, I almost scream. A burning pain shoots up my leg, but I know I have to keep moving, the Harpies will be out soon, and I most certainly do not want to be killed by one when I have gotten this far. I take another step, and bite back a scream. The pain in my leg is unbearable, I get on the ground and crawl towards the growing light. It doesn't help much but at least the pain isn't so bad.
Two figures stand by the bonfire. I know one will be Chiron, the centaur. I reach the mark of the last couple of metres and can feel myself becoming unconcious.
"Help." I croak in despair and pain. The world turns fuzzy and begins to fade when I see him lean over me. Zach.
