Kissing Luke was dizzying; I felt genuinely off-balance even though we were lying down as I pressed my lips to his, my brain screaming at me to pull back but Luke's mouth encouraging me to keep going. He kissed me back, one hand still behind my head and the other frozen, hovering a couple inches above my hip, where it had been when I shocked him into immobility with the kiss. We broke apart and Luke stared at me with a mischievous gleam in his eyes, which shone with amusement. Meanwhile, my cheeks burned.

"I knew you wanted me."

"Shut up, you're ruining it," I grinned and cupped his cheek and felt for the first time—while sober, anyway—the slight stubble growing there. Luke propped himself up on his elbow and lifted me up with him, keeping our lips connected—that is, at least, until he obviously pulled away. "What?" I questioned.

"So many mixed signals, Penny," he said, shaking his head and running a hand through his hair. "You say you'll fuck me, you walk away, we kiss, then you hate me, you won't be my girlfriend, but you'll make out with me a minute later?"

I sat up and folded my legs Indian style, playing with my fingers in my lap. He had a point, but I had a feeling he was just as indecisive of how he felt as I was. "So?"

Luke chuckled, but I could hear the hint of actual confusion in his laughter. "So I want to know if I'm going to get punched in the face while you're riding me or something," he joked, lying down on his back and reaching up to place his hand on my lower back.

"Who said I was going to—" I began, but Luke's face stopped me mid-sentence; it was a clear 'oh, come on' glance. He knew it, I knew it. "Only if you're into that," I replied instead, and Luke started rubbing my back.

"Seriously, though."

I shrugged; this night had gone the exact opposite of how I'd planned. I should be done with my date with Luke and finishing my history paper by now, not discussing S&M with the same guy who I'd almost let plow me on the second level of a frat house, while a party raged beneath us. I cringed inwardly; when did college get so cliché? "Shut up," I said again, play-punching his stomach.

"I'm asking a simple question!" Luke said defiantly.

"It's not that simple!"

"Yes it is!"

"Then you answer it," I challenged, crossing my arms. "What are we?"

Luke let out a breath of air in a long whoosh. "Well," he said, opening one eye slightly to look at me sitting up and looking down at him. "I am a male. And you are a female. We're both smart Homo sapiens. You—"

I smacked him. "You know what I mean!"

"And that's exactly what I mean!" Luke said as he rubbed his pec, where I'd swatted him. "I'm going to be black and blue because of you and not from the right things!"  I said nothing while he got over his poutiness, then he continued, answering the question I'd posed.  "I don't know, if you don't want to date...I mean, I get it. We're graduating and I have a job lined up and you probably do too, so yeah, forget the dating thing." He made a gesture as if to brush the entire idea aside and into a recycle bin. "But I mean, you're still hot, and I'm hot, I don't know, do you wanna like, fuck anyway?"

"'Do you wanna like, fuck anyway,'" I repeated thoughtfully, and Luke realized just how ludicrous his words were when he heard me say them back to him. "Well, that's one way to a girl's heart."
