Chapter One

“So honey, what game do you want to play this time?” mom asked me as she wiped her cake battered hands on her apron, then took it off. “Shutes and latter's!” I said as I wiped my long brown hair out of my green eyes. Mom grabbed the game and sat it down on the table in front of us. “Okay, but shouldn't my big girl be playing big girl games?” momma sat down in the chair across from me with a big smile on her face. She pulled her long curly light brown hair up into a high pony tail and laughed at the face I was pulling. “I'm just messing with you. How old are you now anyway? Twenty-five?” I laughed at her and started to pull out the game board. “No mommy! I'm almost eight!” She grabbed her game piece and placed it on the board at the starting point. I did the same. “Almost eight? Wow, your about to be able to get a job, huh?” I laughed and she did the same. “Two more weeks. Then it's party time!” I smiled big at that. I can't wait for my birthday party. “You go now mommy.” I told her.

She grabbed her card and moved her piece. She was about to say something to me when the oven started to beep. “That's the cake. Hold on Kare-Bear.” She gave me a kiss on the top of my head as she went by. “Turn off the oven this time momma!” I told her as she grabbed the cake and sat it on the counter. “I will. See, watch me.” She reached over and turned it off. I ran over to her and patted her on the head. “Good mommy. Imma go pee now.” She laughed at me as I took off down the hallway.

I had just opened up the toilet lid when I heard something drop on the floor. “Mommy, what fell?” But she didn't answer. “Mommy?” I said as I started to walk towards the kitchen. That's when I saw her. My mom was lying on the ground and her body was shaking uncontrollably. I ran over to her and grabbed her shoulders, trying to get her to stop shaking. The tears were pouring out of my eyes and running down my cheeks. Nothing was helping. “I'm gonna help you mommy.” I ran over to the phone and dialed 911. “911 what is your emergency?” The lady over the phone said In a soothing voice. It didn't help me calm down. “Help me! Please help me. My mommy fell down on the floor. Please help us. Our address is 1234 Pinegrove Lane.” I ran over to my mom once more and tried to get her to stop, but it failed once again. “Okay darling, is she hurt?” The lady said through the phone. “I don't know. She's shaking really bad and she's laying on her back like if she were going to sleep. But her eyes are open.” The lady gasped and said, “An ambulance is on it's way. What's your name?” I started to cry harder as I said, “Karen Riffington.” She took in a deep breath. “Okay Karen, is anyone else at home?” I shook my head, then realized she couldn't see me. “No. Only me and mommy live here.” She rushed on. “Is the door unlocked or to where you can unlock it?” I ran over and unlocked the door and opened it up. “Its unlocked now.” Just then I heard sirens coming from farther away. “I hear the sirens.”

I saw them turn the corner. The lady was speaking but I didn't listen. I saw a man in a blue uniform get out and I hung up the phone. He walked up the steps and I opened the screen door. “Mommy's on the floor over there.” He went off with another guy following. The guy had a stretcher in his hand and they were putting my mom on it. They took mommy and put her in the back of the ambulance and closed the doors. A man, a tall brown haired, blue eyed, skinny man came up to me and picked me up. “Where is your daddy?” He asked. I lay my head on his shoulder still crying. I only said one word. “Jail.” He started whispering about me with his coworker about how “I have no where to go.” and “I know we aren't supposed to do that.” before they finally agreed on something. “How would you like to ride in the ambulance?” I shook my head yes. He carried me to the ambulance and put me in the middle between him and this older grey haired man. I heard a beeping noise coming from the back. “We've got to go.” A man that was in the back said through the small window above my head. The man wrapped his arm around me and pulled me into his side. “Please don't leave me mommy. Your all that I have. No one else wants me.”
