"This is Marian Cornell..." Jaidynn heard her grandmother's hushed voice from down the hall. It was past midnight, long past when she'd gone to her room. She never went to bed, and she definitely wasn't now.
"Wait, hold on. What do you mean..." She seemed stunned. Whatever news she was recieving she didn't want to hear. Or believe. "How? Don't you dare tell me you don't know Elizabeth." Jaidynn leaned closer to the opening to her door, making it sqeuak and her grandmother stop speaking.
Jaidynn stopped immediately, holding her breath as she watched for ant movement at the end of the hall. Nothing. "How did you let that happen?! We have weapons for that! I don't care how many there were, we have a responsibility to that town and it's people." It had to do something with Mystic Falls.
When Jaidynn's parents had realized Mystic Falls had been overrun by vampires, they sent her and her brother, Grayson, to live with their grandparents at their lodge to study and learn about their family history. It'd been months since, and they hadn't heard from their parents in a few days. As expected, they were busy.
"How am I supposed to tell those poor kids, how am I suppose to tell them they're ophans?" The knot in Jaidynn's stomach twisted tight, her breath caught in her throat and her legs weak. She didn't care how sqeauy her door was, her feet were already moving across the hall.
She opened her brother's door, he was still awake as well. His headphones over his ears, he almost didn't realize how his siter was in his room until she shook his body. He saw her teary eyes immediately. "What, did another character died off that show you're obsessed with?" Grayson picked the worst time to be sarcastic, and he saw that when he realized the drastic and upser look on his sisters face.
"Woah, okay what's wrong?" Jaidynn went to open her mouth, but was interrupted by her grandparents standing in the doorway. Their grandmother was already crying and their grandfather with a look or sorrow over his expression.
"Grayson, Jaidynn, I'm so sorry." Marian took a huge breath as she stepped into the room. "I just got off the phone with Sherriff Forbes, back in Mystic Falls." She had no experience with sharing the news of death to anyone, and she never wanted to.
"It's your parents. They...something happened." Marian sat on the edge of the bed. Grayson's hand grasped Jaidynn's. She couldn't speak, she knew the truth: they were dead. Something happened and it ended up them dead.
"Vampires, hungry and hidden away for decades, maybe even centuries surfaced and--" Gerald stopped her. "You don't need to go into detail. You'll scare them."
"No. Tell us." Grayson insisted, though the pain in his heart and already watering eyes showed he was just hoping the story wouldn't end how he thought. Marian sighed, and with a broken heart continues. "They were ruthless, drinking out of everyone. They got to your parents somehow and..."
"They're dead." Jaidynn finished. The first words she'd said. And she didn't want to hear them. Hearing it made it true and no one wanted that.
But nothing could hide them from the truth.
