My mouth dropped open, and I just stared at him.
What the hell was he doing here?!James smiled, stepping closer.
"Hi Katie. It's been a while..how are you?" He asked softly.
I opened my mouth to speak but nothing sensible was coming to my mind.
I let out a short breath, looking at him.
"Why are you here? In New York?" I asked.
"I'm filming a movie...why are you here?" He asked back.
I sighed, not wanting to talk about it.
"Mommy, I'm hungry!!" Jessica whined.
James glanced down at Jess, then back up at me, a shocked expression on his face.
"You have a daughter?"
I nodded swiftly. "Yeah--"
"Hi, I'm Jessica, look at my doll!" Jess exclaimed out of nowhere, speaking to James.
James smiled genuinely, getting down to eye level with Jessica.
"She's beautiful, did your mommy get her for you?!" He asked.
Jess nodded excitedly, looking at me.
"Yeah. Mommy's the best."
James met my eyes. "I bet she is."
I broke our gaze, looking away.After a moment of awkward silence, I spoke.
"Come on, Jess. Let's go eat!"
I grabbed her hand again, we started to walk away.
"Katie.."
I turned around to look at James.
"Can we talk?" He asked softly.
I shook my head. "Right now's not a good time."
"Then later. Tonight." He pleaded.
I thought for a minute.
I hadn't seen James in six years, and out of nowhere, he's here, and I don't know what to think, say or do. All of these feelings that I've locked away are resurfacing.
But he was on the right track. We needed to talk.
"Okay. But come to my place. I can't leave Jessica."
James nodded.
I gave him my address, and said goodbye.
I let out a deep breath as Jessica and I walked into McDonalds.
~~~~6 hours later.
"Did you have a fun day today?" I asked Jessica later that night as I was tucking her into bed.
"Yes, Mommy. I had a lot of fun, and so did Kathy."
I furrowed my brows in confusion, and she laughed.
"My new doll, Mommy!"
I laughed, and kissed her on the forehead.
"I'm sorry, I forgot. That's an awesome name. Sleep tight now, okay?"
Jessica nodded sleepily, and I leaned in.
She kissed me on the cheek, and I smiled.
"Good night honey."
"'Night Mommy."
I closed the door lightly, and could hear my daughter's soft snores as I did.I walked into my bedroom, and stood next to my bed.
James was due here any minute.
As soon as I changed into something comfortable, the doorbell rang.
I walked over to the door, taking a deep breath.
I opened it, and smiled softly.
"Hey, James."
"Hi Katie."
I motioned for him to come inside, and we walked to the living room, and sat down.
We just kind of looked at each other for a minute before he spoke.
"You look beautiful, Katie. Still as beautiful as you did then."
I smiled, a light blush forming.
"Thanks, James."
"You have a gorgeous daughter." He continued.
I took a deep breath, bracing myself.
"Yeah...um..the thing is...we have a beautiful daughter."
James' face froze. "What?"
"Jessica...she's your daughter." I murmured softly.James' POV
I just stared at Katie for a moment.
She just said I had a daughter? That Jessica is my....daughter?!
I have a daughter, and I didn't know? How could she keep this secret from me for all these years?!
I ran my hand through my hair.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked her.
She looked down at her hands in her lap.
"I don't know....after you and I broke up...I didn't really know what to do when I found out the news. Liam was there and....you hurt me James."
I sighed, "I know what I did. And I'm extremely regretful and sorry for that. But you could have told me I had a daughter. She doesn't know me!! She thinks Liam is her father!!! How could you do that?!"
Katie looked up at me, tears filling her eyes.
"I'm sorry, James. But you know now. You can be in her life now."Katie's POV
As soon as that sentence left my mouth, I knew it was the right thing.
I hadn't wanted Jessica to know James was her father, but I knew it was selfish now. Especially because of his reaction to when I told him about her.
They deserved to know each other.
James sighed, "Where's Liam?"
I met James' eyes nervously.
"We divorced last year. All we did was fight. It was better for everyone if we weren't together."
James looked at me. "I'm sorry to hear that. I know you really loved him, Katie."I stared at James. "I did. But not as much as I loved you."
James smiled softly. "I never stopped loving you, Katie."
He stood up, rounding the table, and standing beside me, as I sat on the couch. He grabbed my hand, pulling me up.
I smiled, as a happy tear slid down my face.
"Neither did I, I've loved you forever." I replied.
James' hand found my cheek, and he pulled me close, his lips landing on mine.
The kiss was electric, and it felt like we had never been away from each other; like it hadn't been six years.
I felt it. I felt that I was meant for this man, no matter what."Mommy?" I heard Jessica's voice from the hall.
I turned to face her.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"I wanted some water...you weren't in bed...why is that man from the street here??" She asked quietly.I smiled, looking at her, then at James. His hand found it's way to my waist.
"This is James. He's going to be around for a while. And sweetie, don't worry. You'll learn to love him."She looked at me nervously. "Okay, but I don't really know him."
I smiled reassuringly. "You will. I know this will sound a little strange, but he's your father."
Jessica's face was expressionless for a moment, and then she spoke.
"I know that, Mommy. We look exactly alike." She smiled, walking over to stand next to me.
I held my hand to my mouth, in shock.
"Jessica, baby, how did you know?"
She rolled her eyes playfully. "Momma, I'm six, not dumb. The way you look at him, I could tell he was special to us."
More tears fell down my face, and I hugged my daughter to me tightly.
"Honey, I promise, things will only get better from here." I kissed her forehead.
Jess smiled up at me. "Okay, Momma."
She smiled at James, and made her way back to her room.I turned to face James, smiling.
His arms slid around my waist tightly.
"So where do we go from here?" He asked gently, a gleam in his eye.
I placed my hand on his cheek, staring into his eyes.
"The only way to go is up."
James laughed, smiling, his dimples appearing.
"A new start. I wouldn't ask for anything else. So, no more secrets?"
"No more secrets." I replied, kissing him passionately.
Up we go.THE END
