The reeds shrouding the river's edge parted as a sleek silver she-cat stumbled weakly through them, her belly plump with the promise of kits. The moonlight dappled and gleaned in her fur, as well as bleached the clearing around her in white light.
She winced as another painful contraction rippled through her, doubling over onto her side.
"Rosetail!" She called out. "The kits coming!"
The empty clearing, once silence with sleep, was now stirring with life, cats peering from their dens. A bright red she-cat with large white splotches and green eyes raced towards her, a leaf sac filled with herbs slung around her shoulder. Rosetail was the Clan's medicine cat, for her sense of smell had been taken away at birth.
Rosetail helped her to her paws and guided her back to the nursery.
"Silversky's kits are coming!" Rosetail yowled, arousing the queens currently staying in the nursery as they waited for their own kits to arrive.
"They couldn't have waited until sunrise?" Shadepool, a grumpy black and white queen, grumbled.
Riverfall, a white queen with two healthy kits, glared at her before turning back to Silversky and giving her an encouraging gaze.
Silversky collapsed in her nest, yelping as another contraction exploded through her stomach.
"Swallow these for the pain," Rosetail spread out a line of herbs, popping three seeds into her mouth.
Silversky obeyed, gulping down the seeds with a grimace. She looked at Rosetail, confused, as she placed a stick between her teeth.
"You'll see," Rosetail said.
Silversky bit down on the stick, her teeth sinking into the bark as the next contraction came.
Riverfall held her paw as the kits began to come. Silversky yowled in pain as the first tumbled into the mossy nest, a tiny, spiky ball of fur. Rosetail licked it clean, warming it's fur.
"First one! It's a male!" Rosetail called outside if the closed nursery , where a crowd of cats had gathered.
She chewed up glossy green herb in her mouth and fed the pulp to the kit, which stretched its tiny mouth in a mew of protest.
Silversky groaned as two more kits joined him, mewling. Rosetail repeated the process for each, "Two more! Two she-kits!"
Silversky turned her head feebly to look at her three newborn kittens, wiggling against her. One with brown tortoiseshell fur mixed with gold like his father, wild and unruly like spikes.
"This is Thornkit," Silversky said softly, gesturing toward the spiky kit.
She turned to look at the next, a snow-white she-kit dappled with silver. Her small ears were like pink seashells, and she stretched her jaws into a yawn, exposing her tiny pink mouth.
"I'll name this one Featherkit."
She finally turned to the last she-kit, the runt of the litter. Her fur was a pale orange, with dark orange stripes stretching across her back, circling down her short legs, and ringing up her white-tipped tail. Her tiny paws were white, as well as her twitching ears.
Silversky jumped as her eyelids suddenly opened, revealing shocking dark red-amber eyes flecked with gold.
"Wow, it's very early for her to be opening her eyes," Rosetail admired.
"This one will be Maplekit," Silversky said, the small she-kit mewing as if in response.
"Thornkit, Featherkit, and Maplekit!" Rosetail yowled.
"Welcome to RiverClan, my darlings," Silversky mewed softly.
Silversky pulled her kits to her belly with her tail, scooping them as close to her as possible, and never wanting to let go.
