Devil's Lake, North Dakota, was where it seemed like Armageddon was upon them all.
"Ve need to refill our vater," Lithuania reported as they were coming up on the city.
As they neared it, America pictured a map of his country in his mind and grinned at the approximation he was calculating. "Hey, guys~"
"What?" England grumped. None of them were very cheerful, to be honest.
"We're getting a lot closer to Michigan," he said. "I mean, we're already closing in on Minnesota! We'll be cutting down through Minnesota, then Wisconsin, and we're practically there!"
"Awesome!" Mary cheered, pumping her fist in the air. To counter their gloomy moods, Mary had been trying to stay positive. It was almost comical, in fact. She had been quite pessimistic at first.
"Ve can refill our vater in zhat town over zhere," Germany said to Lithuania, who nodded. "Let's go back und make sure everyvone is prepared to defend zhemselves."
Galilea gripped her lone weapon, a 9x19 mm Walther P99 handgun, a bit awkwardly. She had no experience shooting a gun, and the idea of such a powerful tool in her hands scared her. The redhead looked tentative as she looked it over. 'I hope I don't have to use this... Well, Romano said he would protect me, so maybe I won't have to.'
"I'm supposed to keep both of my eyes open, right?" Galilea asked Romano, who was walking beside her again.
"Sì, so you can see better," he affirmed. They practiced with the weapon a couple of days ago, and though she wasn't a very good shot, she had been able to get the bullet through the edge of their makeshift target, which had been a large oak tree.
The road ran right through the town of Devil's Lake, so there was hardly any avoiding it unless they wanted to risk going off the beaten path. Lakes sat in the surrounding vicinity, which made Aquarius and Pisces a threat.
When they finally reached the city, many split off in small groups to search for water. Mary and Galilea, the two humans in the "crew" of nations, were starting to feel the effects of dehydration as well. What can you do when you're only human?
"C'mon, Thor," America said mirthfully as he gestured for her to come with him. "Help me look for some water?"
"Sure," she sighed, resting a hammer on her shoulder while the other was in her other hand.
A little less than ten minutes passed them all by. Nothing really huge happened, and not very much water was discovered. In this August heat, water was a necessity. Maybe they would have to risk going near the lakes after all...
"Did you guys find much?" America asked when he and Mary met up with the group.
"Nein," Germany replied. "Did you?"
"Nope," Mary reported sadly. "This town's main water systems seem to be malfunctioning."
"Well, it's not like all the water companies are still doing their jobs anymore," England commented when he approached a second later. "Though this doesn't bode well for us. I would rather we didn't risk going close to the lakes."
"Same here," America concurred.
"Vell, as long as ve don't all go near zhe vater, ve should be able to stay relatively safe, ja?" Germany said. "A few can just go near und send back zhe vater zhey get."
"Are those dudes near the water gonna be us?" America asked tiredly.
"Naturally," England retorted. "We're the countries. We have to be there for the people."
