Her Brain

Light. That bright useful source that seems to make everything better in this world. It helps you see in the night and in the darkness. They say that when you die, you're supposed to see a light approaching. If this is true, then I have died a billion times, because every time I open my eyes all I see is the light.

They say light is beautiful, but they don't know how harmful it can be to your eyes. I open my eyes and all I see is a resplendent white poking straight through the windows of my soul.

"Turn it off " I mumble, "Turn it off!"

"Oh my god! Are you okay? I'm so so sorry!" Nathan quickly turned off the the twenty-four light bulbs beaming directly above my eyes.

"What happened in there? I was freaking out!"

"Ugh, I don't know. I think my skin rejected a needle or something and it just ripped off a small piece of my skin, and it hurt like a bitch."

"Has that ever happened before? How much pain did it cause you?"

I cringe trying to remember the pain. But that doesn't compare to the pain I feel every night.

"I've felt worse," I finally say.

"Really? What's the worst pain you've felt?"

"You ask too many questions. Why can't we just proceed with the tests?"

"Proceed with the tests?! Are you kidding me? You were knocked out for a good ten minutes! And I didn't call anybody to help because I was scared. It's my first day and I didn't know if this was something normal..."

He looked down at his clipboard. He bit his lower lip as if his teeth could suck out all the trembling in his body.

"I'm sorry," I urged. Well that came out of nowhere.

He looked up and asked, "Why are YOU apologizing? It's obviously all my fault."

"Because I've been rude to you and I'm giving you a hard time. It's just I'm not used to change." What the hell was I saying.

He sighed. "You know I hate the fact that you allow us to do this to you. I simply don't understand."

"What don't you understand?"

"Like I don't understand this. You. Or your power. I overheard this morning that a window was left open. Why didn't you escape? It was your opportunity to finally be free and yet you didn't do anything about it!"

I snorted, "What you don't understand is that no matter where I am, I'll never be free."
He shook his head and walked to the window.

"When was the last time your feet touched the grass? Or felt the wind caress your hair?"

I thought about it for a while. Honestly, I really can't remember how anything out of these walls felt like anymore.

"You deserve to live a normal life like everyone else. I just-"

"I'm not normal," I interrupted.

"I just don't get it. I don't understand your condition."

"Neither do I," I barked. Neither do I, It echoes in the room.

"How are you feeling right now?" He asked.

"Like I've been walking for miles with eight hundred pounds on my shoulders."

"Did you actually feel something when I touched your cheek this morning?"

"I felt a tingle rolling down my spine and I was automatically consumed. It burned my skin."
