It was Bridget. My breath came back. "Well what the heck were you doing walking around looking like a demon at night? "I snapped.
It seems my near death scare had given me some nerve. Her eyebrows cocked up. Then she said, "I was waiting for Kyle". Why would she be waiting for Kyle in the woods? She could have read my thoughts as she responded, "It's sort of a special spot for us. We meet here a lot but he never showed up". I looked her over. The light of the street lamp next to us glinted off her eyes that were tinged with red. She had been crying. Her coat was wet and torn and she had been limping. "Umm are you alright?" I asked. "Yeah I'm okay" she answered. "Do you want me to ask my mom to drop you home?," I asked. "Umm no one's at home tonight. My mom and dad have a dinner party and they'll be home late.
I was supposed to stay with Kelsey at her place but I wanted to hang out with Kyle. So I told her and her mom my parents' plans got cancelled. I can't go to their house now and I don't like staying alone at mine". I understood that. Her house was massive and staying there alone at night must be creepy. "What happened to Kyle?" I asked. "I don't know. I asked him to meet me here and he said yes but he never showed up and now his phone is switched off." She shivered as she said this and I noticed her coat was dripping water.
"Aren't you cold out here?" I asked feeling sorry for her. "Why do you care?" she asked looking into my eyes and I recalled that we gave her an unsolicited shower earlier that day. It made me feel especially generous considering what we did was a bit much. Surprising myself, I asked "Hey why don't you come to my house? Get dry and cleaned up. Then, we'll see where you can stay". She smiled.
