THE MEAN GIRL FACADE .
" i haven't felt alright in a long time "in the crowded hallways mackenzie would hold her head high faking her confidence. she would make stupid remarks to uphold her act. no matter the price the brunette would always deliver her performance. she would hold back her tears and act dumb for the sake of her social status.
in many ways, mackenzie and her childhood best friend had many things in common. both had changed in unimaginable ways. neither could remember whom they truly were. deep down the rabbit hole, they both fell.
all those years ago mackenzie left her best friend hurt, lost and confused when she ditched him for the popular crowd. in the third grade johnny could see his best friend slowly lose herself. the brunette would no longer want to sit with him. instead, she would spend her lunchtime sucking up to the loren gray hoping to befriend the most popular girl in school. in the fourth grade mackenzie did just that leaving her long forgotten so-called best friend behind.
when things got rough johnny had no one to talk to as his only friend ceased to remember his existence. the young boy was left lonely. he learned to deal with everything on his own, losing himself to the darkness that possessed his fragile mind.
whenever his green eyes meet her brown eyes in the hallways they would act like strangers. they may as well have been. to say that have both changed would be an understatement. neither could recognise their own reflection yet they both failed to notice how much they have changed over the years.
often, the boy would recongise the pain mackenzie tried to disguise. he would notice how her smiles never once reached her eyes, how she would laugh off the mean comments. no matter how much she had changed he knew deep down she was still the same mackenzie he had once befriended.
after seeing the brunette slip off to the bell tower day after day johnny decided he would follow her and maybe he would be able to see mackenzie without her act. maybe, just maybe, he would see the real mackenzie.
what he did not know was just like the real johnny, the real mackenzie was long gone. the kids they once were ceased to exist.
unconsciously a small smile made its appearance on john's face when he noticed the lock that guarded the bell tower door was indeed picked.
cautiously the boy approached the silent brunette. her head made a sharp turn when he dragged his feet catching her attention.
'orlando.'
'ziegler,' johnny mocks.
'so, mackenzie, care to enlighten me what a popular person like you would be doing on the school bell tower?'
'could i not ask you the same thing, johnny?'
'oh kenzie, you out of all people should know. should you not?' when the brunette flinched at the use of her nickname he knew he had hit the bull's eye. if mackenzie was to be completely honest, her nickname took her by surprise. no one called her kenzie anymore, no one at fabrice's even knew about the name she used to insist people call her. when mackenzie diverted her attention back to the view johnny continued,
'funny isn't it, how we surround ourselves with so many people yet we feel so alone.' mackenzie let out a bitter laugh.
'quite ironic,' she added.
the two sat in silence admiring the view. they would sneak glances at the other reminiscing their old friendship days.
