Chapter 5

She was hot. Like bad girl, prep/biker hot. Yes, that's exactly the words Vin used in his head.

At this point he was staring. The skirt and boots without the socks, the low-neck tank top, the unzipped cropped leather jacket, (Vin knew quite a bit about clothes) and was that lip-gloss? Zero looked like a teenage girl. The only thing was that she didn't look happy about it.

"Vin. Your drooling." Zero remarked, slightly amused on the inside.

He shut his mouth and puffed out his chest. "Was not."

It was then that they both realised that their companions had disappeared. Vin looked around frantically, refusing to believe that Newton would leave him alone with Zero of all people, at a party. Zero, plus Party, equals Zero, in a worse mood than usual.

Concluding that he did in fact get left with the girl of his dreams, and nightmares. He schooled his features, took a deep breath in and looked back at her.

"S-so....... um, well hey, you never come to parties. What makes today dif- um, different?" He finished the question with a nervous chuckle. He mentally congratulated himself for starting up a normal conversation.

She crossed her arms defensively. "It's not as if I want to be here." She paused and looked at Vin's questioning face, "It was technically an order from our leader, so it can be classed as a mission, right?"

Vin nodded slowly to show he was following what she was saying. "Sure, I'd say it's a mission." He then got a 'as he would call it', brilliant idea.

"If it is indeed a mission. What, may I ask, is the target?" With those words said, Vin could have sworn he saw Zeros eyes light up.

She smirked, "Were the soldiers, not the brains. It'd have to be something that requires strength." She uncrossed her arms slowly.

It was Vin's turn to grin. "And skill." He continued for her.

Just then Hector stumbles past and just misses hitting the 'soldier' duo before falling over and spilling the contents of a plastic cup across the floor. No one seems to notice until, from across the room, standing on a table, Burt yells, "Weak Hector, man up!" Before chugging down the contents of his own plastic cup and jumping off the table into the crowd causing some girls to squeal.

Zero and Vin stared blankly and blinked once in unison, before a competitive grin spread across their faces.

"Do you think they have tried to talk to each other properly yet?" Asked newton as he fished an ice cube from his nearly empty glass of Fanta.

Trixie considered and tapped her chin with her left hand, "I can only hope so, but I haven't seen either of them in over an hour. Maybe they left?"

"Yeah probably, I mean it's starting to get a bit too loud in here."

Newton furrowed his eyebrows, "Actually, what is all that shouting about?"

They both paused and listened to the crowd gathered over the other side of the room. At first it was too chaotic to make out actual words but some singular words started to make their way through. 'Chug,' 'c'mon', and 'faster.' Trixie and Newton shared a half-disappointed look.

"Honestly, what possesses people to participate in competitive drinking." Newton said as he crossed his arms.

Then the crowd started to chant 'Ze-ro, Ze-ro, Ze-ro...'

Trixie's eyes widen in horror. Then someone shouts above the crowd "GET HER VIN!"

The spies scramble to their feet and begin to pry their way through to crowd. After a minute or so of struggling past the seemingly endless mass of sweaty bodies, Newton and Trixie finally break through the front. And sure enough, the source of the commotion was two of their own.

Vin and Zero were sitting opposite each other with a ridiculous number of empty bottles on the table in between. There was no way of telling how many of those bottles were actually their doing. But then all you had to do was look at the two and you would know it was a lot.

Vin looked almost demonic with his determined expression staring down the competition. His head kept tipping slightly to the one side as if his right ear was suddenly too heavy.

And said competition, being Zero, had the broadest, most genuine smile, plastered across her face. She was giggling in-between drinks and she had pulled her hair up out of her face in a messy bun. Her cheeks were flushed red and she was bobbing to the music slightly in her chair. She was an entirely different person.

Vin had noticed Trixie and Newton arrive at the front of the gathered mass of teens a while ago, with horror written across their faces. But he was yet to acknowledge them. As he would not take his eyes off of the beauty before him. He had never seen her like this, it was hypnotizing. He would almost say she was affecting him more than the alcohol, but he considered this and decided that probably wasn't the case.

Zero slammed a yet another empty cup on the table before her. "You done yet Vin?"

He placed his cup down with not quite as much force and smiled with such determination that you could see just about all his teeth. And to most onlookers it was terrifying.

"Do you think we should interfere yet? It's getting bad." Trixie stood uncomfortably watching on as both her team mates were on the brink of collapse.

Newton fidgeted beside her for a moment before he nodded his head in agreement and they both darted for a drunkard each. Newton picked up Zero's next drink before she could. As expected she broke her smiling face and set it into a usual scowl. "Give me my drink back, Newton, before you get hurt."

Newton gulped in fear. Why did it have to be Zero and Vin that they were intervening. Out of all people!

"Trixie! What the shit!" Vin yelled from across the table. Newton looked over to see that Trixie had pulled his chair out from under him and was now proceeding with an attempt to pick him up off the floor. Newton looked back to Zero who was still glaring at him.

"Uh, look Zero, it's getting late and you've had too much to drink."

As if to challenge that statement she stood from her chair, and to her credit only swayed slightly. Unlike the blond mess of swearing getting hoisted off the floor.

Before either of them could say anything more, the music screeched to a stop, and there was a loud blast of sound that made everyone in the room, including those that were sober, to fall to the ground in agony.

And much to the horror of the Invisible Network. An all too familiar cackling laugh echoed through the speakers.
