I walked down the bus stairs. My foot landed in a puddle and was immediately soaked. Most people would get irritated, but I didn’t care. I walked towards my house, it was a two story house painted grey. It still feels weird calling it my house. I unlocked the door and walked in. Heather came towards me with a warm smile. She had light brown hair with little tints of grey near the roots. I liked her and was thankful she took me in, but there was something off about her. Sometimes I felt like she was hiding something from me. Not just her, but Mike too.
“How was your day?” Heather beamed.
“It was okay.”
“Good. Dinner will be ready at seven.” She replied.
I took off my shoes and trotted up the stairs. My room was the only one upstairs besides Mike’s office. I quickly put my bag and shoes down and headed towards the shower. Once the water turned warm I stripped and stepped in. The water rushed down my shoulders and immediately calmed me. I started to think about my plans later with Lynn. Heather wouldn’t mind if I left, but Mike would. I just had to figure a way to leave unnoticed. I stepped out of the shower and grabbed my robe from the back of the door. Once I was done wrapping it around me I walked back into my room. I looked at my blue chipped nails and decided to re-due them. Tonight I wanted to look like I fit in. When I finished, my nails were a pretty sea green.
Time went by faster than I thought. I still had to text Lynn.
Decided to come along. ~ Avery
Ten minutes later she replied.
Knew you would! Meet me at the store down your street at 10
“Avery! Dinners ready.” Heather shouted up the stairs.
“Coming!”
We were having chicken and pasta for dinner. Mike walked into the dining room. He was tall and muscular with black hair. He offered me a smile and sat across from Heather. Mike had an edge to him; sometimes after a long day of work he looked scary.
“What are your plans for tonight Avery?” He asked.
“Not much, I just planned on going to sleep. I’ve been really tired lately.” I lied.
“Oh. Well Heather and I were going to go see some friends. Hope you don’t mind.” They both stared up from their food to look at me.
“No I don’t mind.” I really didn’t mind. Whenever they were around I felt like I had to watch what I did.
After dinner I told them both goodnight and went upstairs to my room. Now I had to pick out what I was going to wear. I chose a pair of faded blue shorts and a white shirt with a yellow scarf to go along. I’m not much of a makeup person, but Lynn tells me I look good with it. I swiped on a little eye liner and some mascara.
